Thursday. August 8, 1937 The Medical Roundup Aft. Parkinson's Disease ' - Hundreds of people ask what they can do about Parkinson's syndrome (group of symptoms). In this disease the p e r s on's face loses ex pression, and he may get a shaking palsy in one or both hands. He is likely to walk bent over a bit with his hands held motion less near his groin, and he may walk in a peculiar way, shoving his feet ahead. He may be ment ally slowed-up, he may talk without expression, and he may feel as if his muscles were filled with glue. Fortunately, he will usually retain his good sense, his basic character, his old person ality, and his ability to think. Thus, I remember a theoretical physicist with a severe form of this disease who . was still able to make his very abstruse cal culations. In the cases of young people, the symptoms usually follow an encephalitis or inflammation of the brain. In older persons, the cause appears to be a small stroke or a series of small strokes. Many of these strokes come at night, and hence are I not recognized. The question is, what to do? One can hardly hope for a cure, j but only for relief. There are a number of drugs that physicians can try which sometime cut down on the muscular stiffness and on the tremor. Dr. Irving S. Cooper, of New York City is sometimes able to stop the tremor by injecting a few drops of alcohol into a tiny area in the brain of these pa tients, and particularly of the younger ones.' It is hoped that with continuing research, even better results will be obtained. Modern Plant Medicine People like the antivivisec tionists who hate medicine and doctors forget that everything that is ever discovered in human medicine is likely to be used quickly in animal or veterinary medicine. Perhaps, more remark able yet, much of it is trans ferred to plant medicine. For in stance, of late, agricultural ex perts have been excited about a marvelous new chemical, called gibberellic . acid, which is a tre mendous stimulator of plant growth. Much work must still be done on this substance, but the drug can make certain plants grow to two or three times nor mal size; it causes them to grow and develop rapidly, and it may soon be making it possible for truck farmers to bring their pro duce to market much earlier than formerly. It causes plants to flower much earlier and to germ inate quickly. It can increase the number of leaves on a tobacco plant; it can create stronger and longer cotton fibers; it can cause - celery and broccoli to grow more rapidly, and it can produce giant poin- Juveniles Working To Combat Delinquency Chicago (IP) At least three American cities are fighting juvenile delinquency by placing young people in city government positions, the American Muni cipal Association reports. f - The association said some 35 high school seniors in Middle town, Ohio, now work in the city hall several afternoons a week. The students help prepare water and sewer bills, assist building inspectors, develop pictures for police records, test water in pub lic pools, record minutes of the city commission and do various other jobs. The association said that stu dents in Newark, N J., are being hired to collect unpaid personal tax bills. They are paid a dol lar an hour as temporary civil servants.
