By EUGENE BURNS Ranger-Naturalist It is impossible to speak of whales without bringing up that question which is one of the most persistent: "What about Jonah? Could a whale really have swallowed him? And swal lowed, could he have remained alive?" This is a question which must be shared by the student of the Bible and the student of natural history. As for the former, I am told that according to Scripture, Jo nah had been instructed by the Lord to go to Nineveh to preach to the people about their wick edness. Fearing for his own safe- 10EPSO?HETE ty, Jonah instead got on a ship at Joppa to ship for Spain. On the voyage he was caught in a storm. The ship's crew believ ing that Jonah was the cause of it, at his own suggestion, cast him into the sea in order to calm its rage. An accurate translation of the Hebrew text reads: 'Now the Lord had prepared a great fisn to swallow up Jonah. And Jon ah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights." In this, there is nothing to show that a whale was intended. However, in the New Testament, the Gospel of Matthew says: "For as Jonah was three days and nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." But the word here translated as "whale" is Greek and properly means "sea monster. . Some Biblical scholars have conjectured that the story may actually have referred to a small boat which, in the rough sea, was likened to a sea monster; but that after thvee days of bad weather, the boat brought Jonah to land. Others state that the idea of a sea monster was given to the author of the book of Jonah by the local legends con nected with Joppa, the port from which Jonah embarked for Spain; for it was at Joppa that Andromeda was rescued from a sea monster by Perseus in Greek mythology. Not Whalebone Whale Now as for the whale, George C. Goodwin, associate curator of mammals at the American Mus eum of Natural History, New York, states: "If a whale ac tually swallowed Jonah, it cert ainly was not one of the whale bone whales. The throat of all whalebone whales (including the giant sulphur bottom blue whale) do not have a gullet bigger than a man's fist. But the Sperm whale (Cachelot) does have a big throat and in this regard, sperm whales have been observed in the Mediterranean sea." To the question of whether Jonah could have remained alive in the whale, there appears to be a parellel. An English engine er, Sir Francis Fox, states that in 1891 a whaler named James Bartley off a whaling vessel, was swallowed by a sperm whale and remained alive through uncons cious in the animal's belly for 24 hours. He was rescued by his shipmates who caught the whale and then cut open its stomach. Recovered Senses For two weeks, states Sir Francis, Bartley's mind was un balanced but eventually he re covered his senses and was able to resume his duties. Where his skin was exposed to the gastric juices, it -was bleached white. Curator Goodwin on this score adds: "This is a provocative story. There is, of course, some oxygen in the belly of a whale, and it seems possible that an un conscious man could stay alive under such conditions for same.1 But, unfortunately Sir. Francis' fats were second-hand, obtain ed from the captain and others on the whaling ship." Instead of saying "Absurd" to Jonah's story, it would be better to say: "Unlikely." Best Judgment of ' Military Leaders IS 021 Shows That Europe Can Be Defended Editor's note: This is the third in a series by Charles Corddry, United Press military affairs writer. The fol lowing dispatch analyzes Europe's de fensive capabilities. By CHARLES CORDDRY United Press Correspondent Paris W Europe can be de fended. That claim admittedly is con troversial and much debated in military circles in this age of nuclear weapons. It represents the best judg ment, however, of many military leaders consulted during a 6,600 mile tour of North Atlantic Treaty Organization defenses in Europe and the Mediterranean area. Top officers of Allied head quarters here point to evidence that Russia well respect NATO's ability and intention to defend itself. Despite political and economic stresses and troubles ranging from Greek Turkish disputes over'Cyprus to the French army deployment into Africa, NATO has been 100 per cent successful militarily. It has prevented war and it has protected its territory for eight years. If the deterrent should fail and Russia should be foolish enough to start a war, NATO strategy does not envision any prolonged land campaign so far as can be told from non-secret information. Can Prevent Enslavement Whatever the destruction, strategists believe they can pre vent the continent' from being overrun and enslaved. The aim would be for ground and air elements comprising NATO's forward shield to hold at or near the Iron Curtain until retaliatory air forces' could deal crushing blows to the Soviet Un ion. That would not take long, according to available estimates. Vice Adm. Charles R. Brown, U.S. 6th Fleet commander in the Mediterranean, estimated to vis iting reporters that the U.S. Stra tegic Air Command could rain down the bulk of its punishment in something like 16 hours. The fleet, too, would get in some blows in that time, he indicated. Other officers said if the shield force held for '72 hours, Europe could, by aerial attack on enemy forces, be spared from invasion. Gen. Lauris Norstad, supreme Allied commander in Europe, was questioned recently in a U.S. Senate hearing on the abil ity to hold. Defenses Could Hold "I am not talking now of car rying on a land campaign," the Air Force general said. "... If they (the Russians) start the war I think we can hold until the effect of our retaliatory force is felt : . . It might take several days or weeks for most of the attacking forces to feel the full effects of our retaliation." Norstad said Russia could not knock out all NATO's retaliatory air fields in a simultaneous at tack. Other wise, it would have no chance whatsoever for survival. But if it started a smaller scale, would-be local war in Western Europe, the aim ap proved by the North Atlantic Council is to use atomic weapons to the extent necessary to win. According to Allied headquar ters, NATO's greatest need to day to insure against being over run is the full complement of promised German forces. The Germans have just turned over three divisions and two more are expected this year. Their first air wing will be ready this fall, with four more next year. These other reinforcements are scheduled or already being received: Nike anti-aircraft guided missiles will reinforce the slow ly gathering air defenses . of NATO this year, being assigned to both U. S. and Allied forces. NATO air bases still are in creasing. In a year, 67 more will be added to the present 150. In 1959, a radar warning net will be completed from northern Norway-to eastern Turkey, able to look "several hundred" miles into Communists territory and further guarantee against sur prise attack. New supersonic interceptors will reach the U.S. Air Force in the coming year and the 6th Fleet is receiving increasing mis sile armament. Tomorrow Opposing forcei.
