Oliver Hardy, Noted Film Comedian, Dies As Result of Stroke Hollywood W Oliver Hardy, the rotund partner of the famed Laurel and Hardy movie comedy team, died of the results of a paralytic stroke at 6:25 a.m. (PST) today. He was 6V o The plump comedian, who won worldwide acclaim with Stan Laurel ov- a span of more than two decades, succumbed at the North Hollywood, Calif., home of his mother-in-law after a long illness. His wife for 17 years, Lucille, was by his side. They had no children. Hardy, who weighed over 200 pounds, had been in "very poor" condition since suffering a stroke a year ago. He was paralyzed Pullman Berth Cars O Replace By New Type Sleepers o Chicago TO The old type Pullman sleeping car, with sec tional spaceT" is disappearing rapidly from the American scene. The few new Pullman cars splcuous by the absence of low - er and upper berths, with the green curtains enclosing thebed at night and wash room at each end of the car. The late model sleepers are all-room cars. For many years, two types of Pullman cars were dominant. They werft known as the 12-1 and the 10-1-2. The former was made up of 12 sections and a drawing room and the latter consisted of 10 sections, two compartments and one drawing room. The extra-fare trains of other days included one or two super cars as regular'equipment. These cars contained seven drawing rooms and two compartments the forerunner of present-day all - room equipment. Another type used on many trains, par ticularly for such overnight runs as Chicago-Minneapolis or Bos ton - New York, was an old Pull man standby the 16-section ' car. This had no rooms, merely 16 uppers and 16 lowers. Space Cut Down , As the nation became more travel - minded, and rates were low, new sleeping cars put out by the Pullman and Budd Com panies cut down the sectional space, and added rooms. The new cars were called 8-5's. This meant only eight sections, and five double bedrooms. 'The privacy of the room cars caught the fancy of the public. As these new cars came out of the shops, they were assigned to the "name" trains. The room space was quickly sold out, and the sections were used by pas sengers only as a last resort. So the transition was in the mak ing. . The present lineup of Pull man sleeping cars, with the most popular style, are the 10 and 6 10 roomettes and six double bedrooms, 14 and 4 14 roomettes and four double bedrooms, 11 double bedrooms and either 21 or 22 roomettes. The sections are gone. Anyone ji'ith memories of the old type sleeper, desiring one last ride in an American tradi tional mode of transportation should scout around to see ' where a sectional car is still In operation for before long, they will be but memories of a bye-gone age. He could barely eat and make motions with one hand. Death was attributed to the effects of the stroke he suffered Sept. 12. 1956. It left Hardy al most completely paralyzed. He had been trying to tell his wife something ever since the stroke but was never able to write the message. Laurel Nearly Recovered Hardy first was hospitalized in nearby Burbank after the stroke. Then he went to his own home in North Hollywood and, bout six months ago, to the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Monnie L. Jones. Hardy's partner, Laurel, 67, suffered a stroke in June, 1955, and was reported nearly recov ered from it. The pair was about to start a TV series at the time of the thin comedian's illness. The hefty comedian had been living in retirement, but his popularfty was revived recently with the reshowing of many of the old Laurel and Hardy com edy classics on television. He appeared in some 200 films with Laurel during the past 30 years. One of his best known , comedy characteristics was the bashful fingering of his tie. He drew belly laughs with such slapstick antics as falling out of windows, bumping into doors nd hittin with a hammer. Wide Ovation No other comedy team was believed to have won such wide ovation as "Stan and Ollie." Their act was essentially panto mime, which was largely re sponsible for their success be fore European audiences. They developed a distinctive style and in Mack Sennett comedies, were the first comedians to slow the tempo of a picture. The pair seldom followed their scripts closely, improvis ing most oftheir antics as they went- along. Hardy was born in Harlem Ga., Jan. 18, 1892. He attended the University of Georgia where he played guard on the football team. But at the, end of his sophomore year he left school to join a minstrel show He worked in stock for three years and then got his first break in movies when his troupe was in Jacksonville, Fla., where the old Lubin Film company had its studio. Came To Hollywood The company wanted a fat comedian so it signed up Hardy. That same year, in 1915, the company came to Hollywood and brought Hardy along as a fea tured comedian. He went to work for the old Vitagraph Film company. Fox Studio and then Hal Roach, where, a little more than a year after his arrival here, he first teamed up with Laurel. Among their better known feature-films were "Devil's Bro ther," "Babes in Toyland," "Bon nie Scotland," "The Bohemian Girl," "Our Relations," "Way Out West," "Swiss Miss" and "Blockheads." Many Homes Said To Lack Proper. Lighting Chicago (IP) The American Home Lighting Institute said that four out of five Americans are living "in a dreary gloom only a few candles removed from the light provided by the caveman's fire." The institute said recent sur veys it conducted showed 80 per cent of the nation's homes have only 10.9 light fixtures while minimum good home lighting standards call for at least 25. The institute said every living room should have at least one ceiling fixture, and that a fix ture should be provided for the dining room above the table. There should also be a ceiling fixture in each bedroom and pre ferably in the kitchen, the re port said. Hallways and even closets should be well lighted for safety and convenience, as well as the garage attic and basement. "It is needless for Americans to go on living in the dark .when manufacturers are now provid ing fixtures for every type of lighting need," a spSkesman said. HEAVE-HO Segregationist F. W. Pickens in Nashville, Centennial Park without a where he launched his anti Business Situation, Market Views Show Tinge of Pessimism By ELMER C. WALZER United Press Financial Editor New York HPI Wall street's views on the business situation and on the stock market reflect only a tinge of pessimism at this time. The street apparently is convinced that the gross na tional product this year will s h o w a gain and set a rec ord high; that Elmer Waizer saving will continue to increase but at the same time consumer spending will hold at a high rate, and that there is nothing really serious in the news to affect the market. At the same time, the experts point out that there is nothing dynamic to send the market higher, except for the normal rallies in the course of a consoli dation movement. Record Try Anticipated Not all of the commentators have given up anticipating an other try at a new reocrd in the industrial average. Where none agrees is on the duration of the consolidation period. Edmund W. Tabell, analyst for Walston & Co., points out that the consolidation period of 1946-1949 held for around 40 months while the 1951-53 period ran for 28 months. British Doors For London Bar Meeting London HP) Some of the most closely guarded doors in Britain will swing open in July to a lucky band of 5,000 Ameri can tourists. They will include the portals to Scotland Yard, Wormwood Scrubbs Prison and Buckingham Palace The greeters will include Prime Minister Harold Macmil- lan and Queen Elizabeth her self Britain has never put on such a show for visiting Ameri- 'ans. The occasion is the annual convention of the American Bar Association, meeting in London July 24-31. The lawyers of Britain have gone all-out to put on a magni ficent show for the 2,700 Ameri can lawyers and 2,300 of their wives expected to attend the convention. Every hotel room in London has been commandeered, and still 2,500 American lawyers are being turned away. Law and government will come almost to a standstill as high officials turn to entertaining the visitors. To Runnymed Macmillan will address them July 26. Queen Elizabeth will entertain them at a Bucking ham Palace garden party on July 29. U S. Ambassador John Hay Whitney will have the visitors in for drinks at his house one of about 100 various parties and receptions scheduled for the week. There will be a special legal performance of ballet, a legal t-innis match at Wimbledon, leKal golf and even a legal visit to headquarters of Britain's scotch whisky industry (5:30 p.m., July 24, 50 guests only). But work and not play is the purpose for this pilgrimage to Britain work and history. The main occasion is the dedi cation of an American Bar Asso ciation memorial at Runnymede vnere seven centuries ago King John signed the Magna Carta and thus conceded that the law is greater than the crown. Six special trains and 100 bases will transport the Ameri cans to that hallowed meadow by the Thames (25 miles south west o London) where the basis or the English constitution was enacted. A tall granite pillar is rising trere on a base of Portland John Kasper (right) is given the heave-ho by park- cnief Tenn., after being informed he couldn't hold a rally in permit. Kasper then moved to a field outside the city - integration harangue. If, says Tabell, we use April, 1956, as the start of the present consolidating area, a 40-month projection would carry to Aug ust, 1959, and a 28-month pro jection would carry to August, 1958. The current consolidation period could be shorter or longer than the preceding ones, he ad mits. Tabell believes the market will hold in the 525-550 area in the Dow-Jones industrial aver age. This, he adds, does not pre clude the possibility that the averages might reach modest new highs while still remaining in the broad confines of the trad ing area. Cautious Spending Mood Standard & Poor's says the trend toward higher savings suggests a cautious spending mood with reserve buying power that is at once a cushion against decline and a potential stimulat ing force. Standard notes that ability of business to correct itself as it goes along should continue to mean the lessening of the threat of a major business decline. Incidentally, inflation as a market factor isn't being talked about as it was just a few weeks ago. Inflation psychology has its drawbacks, according to invest ors advisory institute, and this, it adds, to a large extent ex-' plains current caution over sec ond quarter profits. Swing Open $28,000 and may turn out to be the most significant of Ameri can memorials to the beginnings of western democracy. There will be legal work as well sessions of the history and practice of British law, advanced legal studies, criminal law (high lighted by the Scotland Yard and Wormwood Scrubbs visits) and many opportunities to trade notes with Britain's greatest legal minds. " This is the largest convention London has ever taken on so big, in fact, that at only one event will every visitor be able to get in. That will be the Queen's garden party on the vast walled-in lawn of Buckingham Palace. Otherwise it's a three-or-more-ring circus. Take the 10 a.m. 17 a.m. period, on July 25. The program includes separate meet ings on "Publicity Attendant Upon Trials," "Probate Law," 'Public Utility Law," "Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law,'' "Anti-Trust Law" and "Fash ion Parade by the British Fur Trade Alliance and National Jewellers Association" and a visit to the Marylebone Cricket Club, the home of Britain's national sport.
