NEVER, NEVER! U. S. Airman 3c Donald Wheeler
holds his now famous head of hair at Fuchu Air Base in
Japan after his release from prison. Wheeler was court
martialed for refusing to get a "white sidewall" haircut
His release was ordered on ground that there had been
technical errors in his courtmartial after Democratic
Senators Richard Neuberger of Oregon and John A. Car
rol of Colorado took an interest in the case. like many
other congressmen, Neuberger protested the courtmartial,
saying it was absul, petty and a good way to cut Air
Force enlistment

Daughters-in-Law." Latter cer
tainly should be a best seller
among mothers-in-law.
Among the Married
Are you acquainted with a
woman who is a half foot taller
than her husband? How is her
matrimonial union progressing?
Hetty Green's daughter, Sylvia,
was a six-footer. Her husband,
Matthew Astor Wilks, was about
six inches shorter than his sta
tuesque spouse. He was 64. Syl
via was 30. Their romance start
ed when they met at the Hotel
Plaza, Maphattan. How happy
their marriage was I cannot say,
bufthere was no divorce. Sylvia
was widowed. Incidentally, when
she passed on she left all her
fortune, which was over $100
million, to charity.
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. What
does it cost the taxpayers to put
a young man through West Point
or Annapolis? A. It costs about
$38,000 to put a cadet through
West.Point, and about $28,000 to
put a man through Annapolis. A
West Point cadet is required to
stay In the Army for a minimum
of three years after graduation.
An Annapolis graduate must
serve four years in the Navy be
fore he can resign.
Purchasing Power
In New Jersey the purchasing
power of the dollar is only
47 310 per cent of what it was
in 1939. That is the official
st&tement. What is it in your
section? Seems to me that every
where in this fair land of ours
that I have been Jately, and I
travel a lot, the dollar has only
about 33 13 the purchasing
power it had in 1939. Practical
ly everything seems to cost three
times as much as it did in the
period immediately preceding
World War II.

It should, however, be pointed
out that insofar as cigarettes are
concerned, the female is a great
er smoker than the male. The
majority of chain cigarette smok

is all right with me except I wish
the ladies wouldn't leave so

ing around. I aiso wish those
young mothers who smoke with
a baby in their arms could do
without a cigarette for that pe
riod. And it would be nice if
those dizzy dames who swing
lighted cigarettes around while
walking through a crowd would
be more careful. I am prejudiced
about this because one such fe
male burned a hole in my ele
gant $75 sport coat .and didn't
even say she was sorry.

thority is Sam Hildreth. In his
autobiography titled "The .Spell
of the Turf" Mr. Hildreth says
that Frank James was his bet
ting commissioner at the Gutten-
berg, N.J., track.
Who Said It?
A couple of subscribers are
arguing as to who said "Few die
and none resign." One claims it
was J. C. Calhoun. The other
says Chief Justice White. Both
are wrong. It was Thomas Jef
ferson. He was referring to the
holders of government jobs.
Three Initials
Note a reference to P. A. B,
Widener. Another to P. H. B.
Frelinghuysen. Still another to
S. F. B. Morse. Those three in
itial names are great eye catch
ers. Also most of the men hav
ing them have been well-known
and financially successfully. Per
haps I would have done better
if my folks had named me Ar
thur Barry Charles Durling.
Then I could have referred to
myself as A. B. C. Durling. What
a by-line that would have made!

Then came Mickey's talked
about TV success in "The Come
dian" and "The George M. Co
han Story." Now the bustling
Rooney is considered hot prop
erty in the topsy-turvy world of
show business again, and is star
ing, not as his usual cocky tom
boy self, but as a cold-blooded
killer in "Baby Face Nelson,'
the story of the real American
gangster.
TV Helped Him
"The TV shows helped tre
mendously," admitted the Mick
as he lolled in a bathtub (but
with a gun on the edge) during
a scene in the picture. "Before
I had to take roles to keep work
ing. Now I'm in a position to
pick and choose my parts."
The studio synopsis of the
movie lists Baby Face's age in
the story as 23, but Rooney
savs he's supposed to be "27 or
28"
"Well, maybe 25,? said the
fast-talking actor.
"But it is really a grown-up
role. He's a ruthless guy, a real
different part for me. This is the
first time I've had my hair long
in five years, I've been playing
mose teen-age crew-cut roles.
. Rooney also wins his first
' adult'' screen kiss in this gang
ster picture. His romantic inter
est is Carolyn Jones, the fiery
girl of "The Bachelor Party."
Although in real life he's wooed
and v?on top glamour girls, such
as Ava Gardner, on celluloid
"I've never been the romantic
type."
"Now I get to kiss my first
gal like I really meant it,"
grinned Rooney.
"Why shouldn't I be the ro
mantic type?" he demanded. "I
l:kc girl types. I guess I Jaaven't
gotten such roles because I'm
short of stature like Edward G.
Robinson. But he's had love
roles in the movies and on
Broadway.
- "I don't think many people
thought I had savoir faire with
the ladies. Somehow I was never
accepted as being old enough
those Andy Hardy holes for
many years not only helped me
but hurt me.
"But I'm 37 now. It's iime I
had an adult role with a love
interest." ,
Rooney climbed out of the
bathtub long enough to say he
next does, an NBC-TV spectacu
lar. "Pinocchio."
"Things were bound to get
better," he said.
