Thor-eau. Monday, August 5, 1957 A year ago writer John Wes ley Noble created a cover story for Holiday Magazine on San Francisco Bay. This July he drove up to visit his father, one time timber cruiser, at Oregon City. Next thing Noble knew he was exploring Puget Sound trails for new national magazine material. Wife Jeanne and sons, Bob and John, came with him on a" day's tour that took in a modern sawmill at Everett and tree farms, large and small, up through Snohomish county. In the days of his youth John Noble bowed his back and hook ed lumber in various Douglas fir sawmills. But the Weyer haeuser Mill B at Everett, now cutting into its second half-century, showed him several new wrinkles. The hydraulic log skin ner was one, the slab chipper another. And he soon learned to use names instead of numbers in noting grades of boards and dimension lumber. Friends, this is hard labor listening, seeing, taking notes mental or penciled, keeping the stuff organized. I could see the Noble brain going like a resaw motor all through the mill. Writ er's holiday! There just ain't any. Backtracking The man whose name is a farrfous byline in "the Post" and "Reader's Digest," as well as in "Holiday," kept whizzing more than ever in the old logging town of Arlington. There Jack Carpenter, conservation-minded editor of the Times, was host. The Noble family and friends were welcomed at a Kiwanis luncheon, then toured on to the' tree farm division of Valley Gem farm. The owners are John Wrage and Charles Grewe, who are first of all dairymen and Guernsey breeders. In October, 1951 the first "tree farm field day" of forest 'in dustry history was held on this same Valley Gem Tree farm, with owners Wrage and Grewe as hosts and Jack Carpenter as master of ceremonies. The field day was arranged to demon strate the main phases of tree farming, one by one, - on the ground. The tree farm has about 400 acres of farm woodland. The 1951 visitors entered it by grav el road from paved highway. The first station was a spread of fern patch and stump past ure, yet black from any old time fires now greened over. Then the field day visitors were halted on an area of Douglas fir seedlings, which had grown since the land was put under organized protection. The third demonstration' plot along the trail-road took in a thick stand of saplings among the huge old stumps. Foresters had put heads and hands to gether here to show how prun ing could be made to raturn a potential of $45 per hour as wages for pruning labor. Then the touring groups were guided through a strip of . 40-year-old trees that had been thinned on one area, left to mature on the other. The process of pulpwood har vesting was demonstrated along the road. It included mechanical aids that had been developed by machinery manufacturers for tree farmers. There was a new type of small log loader, pow er saws, little log-haulers, kit ten tractors, and horse-logging hatches too. One station stop was to show salvage of snage and windfalls. Various harvests were tagged to illustrate returns to be expected from the average tree-farm acre. An hour after opening time there were 414 automobiles on the parking field, and at least 1,200 men, women and children were going in small organized groups from one demonstration station to another. By far the greater number was made up of farm folks who owned "back 40s" of woodland and were on hand to learn. And now, here I was again, nearly six years later, with John Wrage, Charles Grewe and Jack Carpenter. And now the story to tell on the old-time stations was wonderful indeed. - Fire scars were greened over. Snags were salvaged. The knots of the pruned trees were sheathed with layers of new, clear wood.
