o 0 SIX MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday. August 1. 1957 .Rebuilt New Guinea Boasls Volcanoes, Modern Quarlers Rabaul OP New Guinea has put out the "Tourists Welcome" sign, with volcanos, tropical beauty and modern plumbing as leatured attractions. This last frontier of the South Pacific has rebuilt its war-de-troying communities and now in vites travelers to enjoy its weird scenery, fish its waters and re ax amongst its hospitaable peo ples. Modern hotels have been built at such historical spots as Lae, Guadalcanal, Rabaul, Madang and Port Morseby. Quantas links the area with regular scheduled air and flying boat service, and the beer is served ice cold every where in these Australian and British-governed islands. The grandsons of cannibals deftly serve the lobster mornay. ff white linen hotel cloths and Quanta stewards pour tea from a silver service while flying over the rusting, bombed out hulks of Japan's navy at Buin, Buka, Finschhafen, Bougainville and "The Slot." Cotton-skirted "boys" drive shiny new taxis in bare feet and and dial telephones have been installed in Rabaul, Lae and Port Mftrseby. Tipping is con sidered improper everywhere in the islaftds, and the natives in this Utopia consider work an adventure. Active Volcano . Horse racing, cricket and foot ball are major sports, and the social activities center around the golf clubs whose greens' are equal to those anywhere. ... The scenery is Hawaiian-type ' with perpetual greenery, hibis cus, orchids and hot house flowrs. The peaks on the major - islands range between 6,000 and 8,000 feet, and Mt. Bagana on Bouganville is the world's most activs volcano. Seldom a day passes that molten lava, boulders and steam are nt seen erupting from its cone. Sandy beaches, private pools and cocopalm atolls are every where. Luggers move amongst the smaller islands bringing in copra from the plantations and returning with supplies. The latest model cars line the streets cf the towns, but out in the bush the jeep is still king. And perhaps, nowhere in the world it is possible to enjoy a vacation as cheaply as New Guinea. Accommodations with five meals a day included cost about five dollars, with other services in proportions. With the welcome mat on the door, New Guinea hopes to be the world's most exciting area for the off-the-beaten track tourist. Teamster Link Said Threat To Country Washington OD The' Senate labor rackets committee charged Wednesday that the Teamsters Union has joined wilh plunder . ing racketeers in New York and others major cities to pose a serious threat to the entire coun try. . Committee counsel Robert F Kennedy made the charge at the start of public hearings on al leged tie-ups between teamsters "crown prince" James R. Hoffa and New York hoodlums. He ""Ssaid no other union has such an effect on the nation's economy as te teamsters with their control ; of truck transportation.
