It s for the chil dren's sake. Ellen J. I was married, less than a year ago, to a divorced man. I am very much in love with him. and perhaps a bit jealous, but I can't help feeling that he devotes too much time to his ex-wife. Johnny calls his ex-wife every evening and spends 3 bout an hour on the telephone with her. He stops over at her home for a few minutes a couple of times a week to "see the kids." We have one or more of the children with us one day of nearly every week end. . It's gotten so that sometimes I feel like an intruder in John ny's life. I hoped to have chil dren ef my own, but I'm begin ning to think that I and my children would always have to play second fiddle. Jonathan J. Ellen is such a" silly girl. Why would I have di vorced my wife and married her if she was "second fiddle"? I love Ellen and want to be with her, but she can't seem to under stand that you can't shake off a relationship of nearly 15 years as if it was nothing. One reason for our divorce was that my ex-wife is a very nervous, confused person. She can't seem to make decisions and comes to me with every prob lem. For the children's sake I have to help her out of the many muddled situations she gets in volved in. As for the children, they are everything to me and I can't con ceive of leaving them entirely to the mercy of my ex-wife. She's too flighty. The Council It may come as a shock to Jonathan, but what he is attempting to do can't be done in our monogamous soci ety. Only in societies where a man is permitted to keep more than one wife under one roof, and where each of the wives un derstands that her claim to a husband's attention is quite lim ited, can a man act as the head of two families. ' Ellen rightfully resents her present position virtually that of concubine. She wants Jona than to make a real break, not merely a paper one, with his ex wife. Since he has chosen di vorce, he must do this, even at the expense of his children's hap piness. . 0 However, it is by no means certain that the children would be worse off if their mother is forced to assume more responsi bility. The present situation is a most disconcerting one. They've got to begin to accept their mother as head of the household and their father as only a part time Dad. This is what divorce means when children are in volved. It is ashsumed that the ex-wife On The Side By E. V. Durling (Distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc.) Why are female writers con stantly charging men with not being what they, said females, call "romantic"? Men have writ ten over 90 per cent of the worth while poetry dealing with the subject of love. Most of the suc cessful love songs have been written by men. Also why do men marry? A woman who is not married is spoken of in a. dis paraging manner. Her life is generally regarded as not being successful. Women hope to be able to combine love and mar riage but their main objective is to be married and not be a spinster. On the other hand a man who is a bachelor is not thought any the less of oecause he has not married. In fact, some people consider him a smart fellow and envy him his liberty. Then why do mfti marry? Why, because they are romantic. They marry for love Asking Queries from clients. Q. Who introduced the song titled "Mary Is A Grand Old Name"? A. Fay Templeton in George M. Cohan's great musical titled "Forty-Five Minutes From Broadway." In cidentally, Fay was 40 years old when she played Mary in that is of reasonably sound mind. If she is not, Jonathan should see what he can do about getting custody of the children. If this woman is fit to have custody of the children, however, she must learn to make most of her de cisions without help from the man she obviously still turns to as her life partner. Statue In MacArthur Park, Los An geles, Calif., there is a statue of Gen. Douglas MacArthur. A ; Californian asks if anywhere in j the world is there another sta-i tue erected in honor of b. living man. The query has me baffled. How about you? Names At one time feminine illegiti mate children deserted and res cued by foundling homes were given names similar to the month in which they were born. That is, a foundling born the first month of the year was given the name January. One born in April was called April. One born in June was named June and so on. The practice was aban doned some years ago. Simple Question The following baseball 'ques tion recently appeared here: "How can a batter drive in three runs without hitting a fair ball?" A surprising number of baseball fans seem baffled by this, very simple question. The answer is as follows: "With two out, the batter bunts the ball along the third base line. Just as the ball rolls, foul, the third baseman throws his glove Jt the ball and hits it into foul territory for an automatic triple, which clears the bases." Smoking If worried about the effects of smoking why not try a hooka? That type of smoking has been declared absolutely harmless by medical experts. The effects of smoking cause me no concern. I am in complete accord with what Byron observed, as follows: Sublime tobacco! Divine in hookas, glorious in pipe, When tipped with amber, mel low, rich and ripe. Yet thy true lovers, more ad mire by far Thy naked beauties Give me a cigar! Get It Right From Hugh Blue, President of My Name Is A Poem Club and a native of Dubline Ireland the following commuijicatiot. has been received: "Sir: In the in terest of accuracy I find it nec essary to inform you that the widest and most beautiful street in Europe is O'Connell Street, Dublin." Those Wagons What we call a station wag on" is referred to in England as an "Estate Car." In Cali fornia same type of vehicle is called a "ranch wagon." Many Californians have fancy ranch names painted on the side of their wagons such as "Rancho Paradiso," "Flying A Ranch," "Rancho Grande Malibu," etc. This recalls that in Los Angeles I once saw such a wagon in scribed "Wegotno Raaph." Cold Women "The cold in clime are cold in blood." That's what Lord Byron wrote. It is evident he never visited Sweden. Those Swedish blondes are said to be the most intensely affectionate females in Europe. The Italian and Spanish women are not in it with the Swedes when it comes to loving. Those . who should know say tne Italian and Span ish women can control their love. The Swedish girls never even try to do that They just don't struggle. West Powers Agree -On Joint Open Skies London (IP) The western powers Wednesday agreed on a joint open skies aerial inspection plan to be presented to the So viet Union as part of a first step toward disarmament. The agreement was reached at a 90-minute session this morning among Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, France's Jules Moch, Britain's Foreign Secre tary Selwyn Lloyd and Canada's David Johnston. Dulles immediately invited So viet Deputy Foreign Minister Valerian Zorin to join the other western delegation chiefs at an informal working lunch at Win field House, official residence of the U.S. ambassador. Man's Body Found Under Portland's Steel Bridge Portland (IP) A man was found dead from knife wounds Wednesday under the west end of the" Steel bridge here. The victim was identified ten tatively as Charles Henry Sims, 43. Detectives said he apparent ly had been beaten with rocks. A blood-stained knife blade with the handle removed was found near the body; The Soo canal locks carry more cargo than the Panama and Suez canals combined de spite the fact they are ice-bound four months a year.
