HOLDING BILL FOR ONE CENT from Treasury Depart ment for income tax, Mrs. Ruby Crosby, Los Angeles, says it will cost her 15 cents to obtain check plus three cents postage to settle overlooked account. (International) Truckload of Fish May Travel Unmolested Now Sleep in a German Castle For One Dollar Per Frankfurt Night sleep in a castle in Germany for a dollar a night. The price does not include ar mor, serf service or other princely privileges. But it does provide a good night's sleep in surroundings where everything but the plumbing and the inner spring mattresses are medieval. About 30 of the dozens of cas tles and palaces throughout Ger many now take in tourists. Most of the others are used as muse ums or government offices. Only a few of the castle-dwelling caste can still afford to heat 40 or 50 rooms and pay the wages of a corps of servants. Putting up tourists solved the financial problems for many of the old families. They continue to live in their castles, in a small apartment of a dozen or so rooms tucked away in a remote wing, and rent out the rest. The Oldest The biggest bargain among the moated hotels is Kropsburg, a 750-year-old castle near the French border in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. A room with full board there costs $1.78. In the dollar category for rooms only are Falkenburg, near the Czech border 100 miles northeast of Munich; Zell, on the Moselle River, and Schnellen burg, near Dortmund. Berlepsch and Trendelburg castles, about 70 miles north of Frankfurt, are among the oldest of the lot. Berlepsch was built in 1369 and Trendelburg in the 13th century. In those days no one had, yven heard of the New World, let alone the hordes. of tourists that leave it each year for Egrope. Kronberg, in a mountain vil lage near Frankfurt, , is brand new by castle standards. It was built in 1839 by a daughter of Britain's Queen Victoria who married a German prince. After World War II, Kronberg became a U.S. Army officers club and was the scene of the million-dollar jowel robbery committed by an army colonel and a WAC cap-, tain. A Golf Course Kronberg is surrounded by a golf course, and it boasts giant You can 1 fireplaces, damask hangings and deep carpeting. Its rates begin at four dollars a day. Some of the castles have built in legends, but ghosts are rare. Hagsthausen, overlooking the Neckar River south of Heidel berg, was the home of the 16th century knight with the iron hand, Goetz von Berlichingen. Castle guests can watch Goethe's drama about the knight enacted in the courtyard during the sum mer. Ghosts of Rhine River seamen are supposed to haunt the towns along the river; but they have not been reported in the castles on the hills above town. Tourists can find out for themselves at Schonburg Castle at Oberwesel,. south of Bonn for three dollars a night. Children Should Remain at Table Urbana, 111. API Children of pre-school age should learn to stay at the table until the adults finish eating, but most of the other "manners" will come with age. That's the opinion of Mrs Rita McGreer,, University of II-1 linois nursery school dietitian. Children should be expected to learn the proper use of eat ing utensils, said Mrs. McGreer, but parents shouldn't be too alarmed if children bring their fingers into play when the tools aren't getting the job done as the child thinks it should be. Pre-schoolers should also learn not to monopolize conver sation and attention at the fam ily dinner table, added M r s. McGreer. ' STOCK MARKET NOTE Wellesley, Mass. Los Angeles 36, Cattfomis Pi Geneva (IPl The United Nations is split over nuclear fis sion, but it is united onrush. While diplomats argued atom ic problems at U.N. world head quarters in New York, tech nicians at European headquart ers here quietly negotiated a far reaching agreement knocking down some European customs barriers. The pact, arrived at by the U.N. Economic Commission for Europe, makes it possible for a truckload of fish to travel from Denmark to Italy without being being opened for Inspection at every border between. That means fish arrive faster and fresher. Fish is just one of the subjects dealt with at the U.N. headquar ters here which occupy the spacious, campus-like grounds of the old League or Nations where on a clear day one can see snow-capped Mount Blanc towering in the distance. In this peaceful setting, many an international agreement has been reached on such matters as the sale of lumber, the distribu tion of perishable food and the movement of refugees across borders. Better Than New York T,he World Health Organiza tion has sent out vaccines and serums from Geneva to inocu late tens of millions of persons throughout the world. A nar cotics control agency here tracks down illegal shipments of opium or heroin to their sources. Representatives of manage ment and labor from nations throughout the world turn U.N. International Labor Organiza tion conferences into noisy ses sions that sometimes sound like collective bargaining meetings about to dissolve into strikes. But such sessions do not bring vetos or threats of walkouts.' One of the most hectic confer ences ended with the setting of minimimum international stand ards governing working and liv ing conditions for millions of persons around the globe. Now the labor-management groups are debating the problems of automation in an atomic world. U.N. officials transferred here from world headquarters in New York say they miss the brighf lights" of Broadway- and big city spare-time diversions, but as far as their jobs are con-1 cerned they like Geneva better. For one thing, they don't have to fight rush-hour crowds in this city of 175,000 persons. For an other, they feel they get more work done here. "There is a certain pyschologi cal factor here," one of the trans ferred officials said. "There is a greater exchange of ideas and information among the people in different grades and organiz ations." Experts, Not Diplomats In New York, he said, the biggest jobs are done by diplo mat who ranks as ambassadors, but here the work is carried out by interational civil servants. "Thf meetings here are at tended 1 by experts, not very often by lawyers," he added, by experts in whatever is be ing talked about. The atmos- Poison Ivy Warning Given by Health Dept. Lansing, Mich. (IPl Most per sons think that they can recog nize poison ivy, the scourge of summer picnics, but there are some harmless plants that re semble the itchy stuff. The Michigan State Health De partment said the old couplet, 'leaflets three, let them be." is one of the best reminders for the summer. Poison ivy grows as a vine, bush or shrub but the best way to spot it is to watch for three shiny green leaflets. Virginia creeper is similar in appearance, the department said, but has five leaves and is harm less. A thorough washing of the part of the body which came in con tact with the three shiny leaves is the best method of counter acting its effects. Then a physic ian should be called immediately. Something is learned every time a book is opened. Chinese proverb. Daily's U-Drive Medford Airport phere is one . of discussion by technicians on a technical level. It is, impossible to say there nev er is any politics, but there is tery little of it. More practical work is done in Geneva than in the whole 39 stories of the ILN. in New York." There is still a cold war chill in relations between eastern and western g?presentatives here, however. The Russians are al lowed to le where they choose in Geneva, while in New York they live where their bosses tell them to. But most Americans steer clear of their Communist colleagues except during work ing hours or at official functions. "The Russians I meet on the job do not seem to be very in teresting persons," a U.N. tech nician expert explained. Recent figures give the U.N. a total of about 4,000 employes throughout the world, with 3, 000 of them in New York. These figures do hot include the spec ialized agencies. A total of about 500 U.N. headquarters personnel work here, along with about 1,500 or 2,000 members of spec ialized agencies, most of whom come from-i' academic, rather than diplomatic backgrounds. The Uni versity of Wisconsin College of Agriculture suggests two meth cds of getting rid of bees and re lated stinging insects that may get established in walls of houses or hollow trees. ' . . The first method is to plug the entrance with a cloth saturated with a concentrated oil solution of chlordano and the other is to fasten a double paper sack con taining either benzene hexachlo ride or calcium cyanide around the entrance. - - Ordinary DDT will kill ,the bees but not as quickly as the suggested chemicals. Caution should be taken with the latter as they are poisonous. It is easier to destroy the bees soon after they enter a building than after they have stored a large quantity of honey. If colo nies have occupied a building for a year or more, it is best to de stroy them early in the spring when their honey supply is low. Frequently bumblebees, hor nets, and wasps have nests close to a house rather than in it. Even nests of hornets pr wasps hanging from the aves can be taken care of with a ' strong stream of water from a hose. The best time to do this is in the night because there is less dan ger of being stung. - .' . If stung in the process of erad icating bees, the stinger, should be scraped not pulled out. Pull ing it will force more venom into the flesh and cause greater irri- tion. MOTHER GRADUATES New England, N.D.
