Buttons and Snaps
Why don't all clothing manu

on to stay? Would save a lot of
repair time and lost buttons.
Come to think of it, why don't
they provide extra buttons with
all garments, just in case.
Why don't they:
Attach white collars and cuffs
to dress or suit with snaps in

be easier.

Festival Lecture
Series Begins
In Ashland Today
Ashland The Gresham Lec
ture series opened today at the
Institute of Renaissance Studies,
the educational activity of the
Oregon Shakespearean festivaL
Dr. Marporie Bailey, former
Stanford university faculty mem
ber, is director of the institute.
Dr. Arthur Kreisman of South
ern Oregon college spoke on the
topic "The Thirty-One Com
mandments of Andreus Cappel
lanus." a review of the code of
courtly love. The lecture was
held in the Ashland library as
sembly room.
Dr. Kreisman is president of
the Northwest conference of
Teachers of English which will
meet in Ashland the third week
of the festival. He has also con
ducted a popular television lec
ture series. Dr. Kreisman. whose
efforts were vital to the develop
ment of the humanities studies
at Southern Oregon college, was
also instrumental in establish
ing the close collaboration be
tween the college and the insti
tute, it is said.
Dr. Kreisman traced the his
tory of courtly love from its
starting point in India and the
Orient. He said that by Shake
speare's time it had become a
mild code of gallantry, but ex
tremely important as an element
in social training. The lecture
showed the strong influences of
courtly love in Shakespeare's
plays, with particular emphasis
on its effects in this season's
plays.
