Horses and Women Note Lana Turner refprred to as "the original sweater girl." The original sweater girl was Lily Langtry. That was in New York in the 1880s. Henry Collins Brown, distinguished New York City historian, in referring to the sweater girls of the Elegant Eighties, said that the sweater "undoubtedly did justice to all the curves of beauteous woman hood." He added that "when worn by a girl with a boyish figure it was quite permissible to add various devices that sup plied some deficiencies which nature had omitted to provide." Simple Question Have you a daughter who is a high school co-ed? How is she doing? Here is a simple question in United States history to ask her. There were nine capitals in the United States before Washington, D.C., Were desig nated as the permanent seat of government. What were they? Please Note Marcus Loew Sr., founder of what is now the Rletro-Goldwyn-Maycr (M-G-Ml film company, told me the Metro Film Com pany, forerunner and foundation of the M-G-M company, would have gone into bankruptcy had it not been for the profits reali zed from Rex Ingram's produc tion titled "The Four Horsemen of Apocalypse." You rememberi of course, that Rudolph Valen tino was the star of this great film but can you say offhand who his leading lady was? . Dining Have you dined recently at a restaurant of which your Rreat grandfather was a patron? There are several places in Manhattan where my great grandpappy, on my mother's side, dined fre quently. As for exampes Libby's Oyster House, established in 1800. Sweet's Sea-Food Restau rant, established 1845 and Rolfe's Chop House, established 1848. Many men donf care to have their wives feature long hair styles. It all depends on the woman. That is, whether or not she is a long hair or short hair type. Men also know that clever ly designed short hair styles make a woman look younger. What husbands object to are short hair-dos that make women look like men. Anyway, give the men more credit for style sense. Smart wives always ask their husbands' opinions as to hats and hair-dos. For one thing they get an honest reply. When a woman asks another woman about a hat or a hair-do she usually gets an insincere answer. Fair Rule When the great Tod Sloan rode W. C. Whitney's Ballyhoo Bey in the Sheepshead Bay Fu turity of 1900, he had among his opposition a three-horse entry. The jockeys on two of the horses of this entry tried to shut Sloan off so the third horse of their stable could go on and win. Sloan was too smart for them. He won on Ballyhoo Bey. Anyway, I believe that dis qualifying the whole entry in a race for a foul committed by any member of that entry is a just rule. Any change in it would just be more coddling of the whining, tin-horn gambling type of turf fan. Launching Day How old were you when first able to swim? Take any swim ming lessons? Neither did I. In our old neoghborhood in Brook lyn August First was known as "launching day." On that day all kids who had reached the age of 10 were tossed off the dock to prove they could swim. Of course, many older fellows stood by to rescue any youngster who couldn't swim. But I never saw a kid fail in the test. They all started getting ready for "launch ing day" when six or seven years old. Police io Question Suspect in Siayings La Porte, Ind. W Police to day questioned a big and mean armed robbery suspect in con nection with the slaying of five persons in New Mexico and California. George Hamilton. 22. was ar rested Sunday by Michigan City, Ind.. police after a S60 filling station holdup at nearby West ville. Authorities said they found the robbery loot and a .22 caliber gun in his possession. State Police Detective Ser geant Frank Wallace said Ham ilton claimed he was from Sac ramento, Calif., and admitted stealing his getaway car from Missoula, Mont., July 13. State police said Hamilton will be questioned in the slay ing of two El Scgundo, Calif., policemen last Monday and the murder of a truck driver and two women the next day near Hobbs. N. M.
