o While Teenagers cQueslioned About Cause of Disorder Chicago V Airtborlties to day questioned five white tee egers about the cause of a racial melee in a city park io which 23 persons were injured by Cl ing stones, bricks, bottles and bats. Police put an emertncy plan in effect to stop the fighting try about 300 persons and to crmtrol a crowd of an estimated 3.0U0 curiosity seekers. All but two of the injured were treated and released t South Chicago Provident aod Jackson Park hospitals. L,Wr Johnson, 18, was kept at South Chicago hospffjM with a powi'oie fractured skull and John Bur gess, 42, was held at Provident hospital with a possible rib frac ture. Police said the clash apparent ly started when a group of a:xut 50 white youths charged a pic nic sponsored by a Negro social and civic club at Calumet park on the lakcfront. The area on Chicago's SouCi Side has bcft the scene of fre quent racial disorders since World War II when the city's ex panding Negro population began moving into cpreviously "all white" neighborhoods. Park district police tried to break up the battle by firing warning shots into the air, but the fighters ignored the show They called for aid from city police who sent 23 squads to the scne and the groups were quick' ly separated. Park District Police Sgt. James McCormick was struck in the head by a rock, but was not injured seriously. A Cub Scout leader at the park, who refused to be quoted by name, said Calumet park had been used almost entirely by whites until recently. He said a group of whites chased 50 Ne groes away from the playground last Sunday. OH, MY ACHING BACK Now ! I'm not the same little girl. Mrs. D. M. She should rea lize her parents know best. Ina M. I am 24 years old and was recently divorced after a marriage of two years. My husband, I discovered soon after marriage, was a selfish, unreas onable, domineering man com pletely unfit to live with any one. Now that I have my freedom I want to enjoy it. I have grown a lot through my experience and I want to get to Ttnow many men. I don't want to plunge in and make another mistake with out knowing what I am about. I made the mistake of return ing to live with my parents, who seem to think I am the same little girl I war. before the mar riage. They think they have a right to have something to say about the men I go out with, the hours I keep, etc. . . I can not stay on with them if they take this attitude. M. Ina likes to think of herself as a woman of experience because she has a marriage and divorce behind her but she is really the same silly girl she was four years ago. Her father and I warned her against the man she married, but of course she thought she was smarter than her parents. She had her own ideas and Is suffering because of them. Ina now goes out every night of the week and returns at any hour at all. She has been going out with awful men, but she won't listen to a word we say. We are afraid that she is just ruining her reputation and no nice man will want her if she continues the way she has been carrying on. We want her to realize that her parents know best. The Council If Ina is still the same "silly girl" she was four years ago, things are, in deed, pretty bad. It will do her no good, however, to "rea lize that her parents know best." For belter or for worse, Ina is now an independent person and must develop her own judg ment. Her parents cannot set the conditions of her life as if she were a teen-ager. They do wrong by criticizing her about the mistake of her marriage. She knows it was a mistake and it doesn't help their relations with her to rub it in. Ina is probably going through the same "rebound" period that anyone who has just ended an involved relationship suffers. She wants to prove many things Tit A. f PROSPECT Unity Center Prospect Many local people attended the Unity center picnic at Casey State park Sunday, July 28. Mr. and Mrs. L. It marked Mrs. Eisenhower's first visit of consequence to Col orado since the President suf fered a heart attack at the Doud residence Sept. 24, 1955. The White House said Mrs. Eisenhower planned to return to Washington Aug. 3 in time for the 35th birthday of her son, Maj. John Eisenhower. The park is half completed. to herself that she can inter est other men and be interested by them, that she really is free and independent, that the fail ure of her marriage was not her fault. This is not a pleasant spectacle for any outsider to witness. Cer tainly it is difficult for worried parents. There is little they can do in this case, however, except to practice patience and show her they will be ready with help and guidance when it is wanted. Copyright 1957, General Features Corp.
