The Family Council does not give advice; It merely reports on problems that have been dealt with by responsible agencies and counselors. Bertram S. She should break her engagement now. Debbie K. I want to wait un til he comes home. Bartram S. I am a young man of 20 in a heck of a pickle. My best friend, Dan, is en gaged and has been overseas in service for the past year. While he was away, he suggested that his fiance and I go out occasionally together so she wouldn't be too lonesome. We have all been friends since we were kids, to it seemed natural for us to get together anyway. Well, we started going out and one thing led to another. I kissed her good night, kidding ly at first, as proxy for Dan. We laughed about it, but gradu ally we started feeling differ ently about each other. Sudden ly we realized we were in love. : I want to marry Debbie, and feel that she should write to Dan at once and break -the en gagement. She doesn't want to do this. Debbia K. Dan will be home in a few months and I think there will be time enough then to tell him. It seems too mean to break this on him while he is so far from home. Dan writes about nothing but his plans and hopes for our marriage. His letters are filled with affection. He says he thinks about me all the time. Bert and I feel like real heels to do this to' him. Dan is a very wonderful guy aftti I am worried about the ef fect this will have on him, not only where I am concerned, but because of Bert. He thinks the world of Bert and trusts him like a brother. The way I figure it, the best thing would be to wait until Dan comes home and then let him catch on by himself, gradu ally. Or we'll wait a little while and tell him ourselves. Tha Council: This "heck of a pickle" could be easily dissolved by a general admission by Bert ram and Debbie that they know very little about this "love thing and do not know their own minds enough to marry any one at this time. When a woman is mature enough to be engaged, she doesn't make a habit of going out with other men to avoid being lonesome. She finds other ways of occupying her time She doesn't "kiddingly" kiss anyone and she doesn't decide, on the basis of a momentary thrill, that a new love has en tered her life. Bertram and Debbie offer nothing to back their case, ex cept that they now feel attracted to one another. What would hap pen if Bertram were sent over seas tomorrow? Would their love stick? Doubtful. Would they still want to marry if each met another and got kissed by "proxy"? Very doubtful. In the meantime, it is wrong to let Dan go on believing that he is coming home to a loving fiancee and an early marriage. Debbie should let him know that she feels she is not ready for marriage. She should not mention Bert ram because he 'is not really involved. He is simply a pawn in her own uncertainty. Bert ram would do well to step out 24 Children Alfend Fourth Story Hour Twenty-four children, from five to 11 years old, attended the fourth story hour of the series being presented each Wednesday afternoon in July at the Medford Public library. Miss Noreen French told the humorous story, "How Pat Got Good Sense," and James Barclay related the Bible story of "The Coat of Many Colors." Johnny Applcseed music was also a part of the program. Attendance at the story hours has been good, according to Mrs. Hazel Ann Hunt, with as many as 33 children on some occa sions. Stories are told by mem bers of Mrs. Hunt's class in children's literature, offered at Southern Oregon college sum mer session. The last story hour of the scries will be presented Wednes day, July 31, when Miss Natalie McDoucall will tell the story of "The Snow Maiden." All chil dren of the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades are invited to at tend the session at 2 p.m. Morrow Rancher Drowns In Hat Rock Park Lagoon Hcrmiston, Ore.
