Man Solves Problem
Of Termites in House
Muskegon, Mich. (IP) Dal
las Varney has won his battle
with termintes and the Chesa
peake & Ohio railroad.
The hassle began when ter
mites infesting rotting railroad
ties on an abandoned siding
threatened to invade Varney 's
new home.
Varney tried to find the owner
of the tracks but couldn't and
finally ripped out the 165 feet
of rails. Then the C&O handed
him a bill for $72.
When he failed to pay he was
arrested for grand larceny.
Circuit Judge Henry L. Beers
directed a jury to return a ver
dict of Innocent after Varney's
attorneys contended the track
had not been used since 1929
and a house currently stands in
its path.
The termites?
"I haven't been bothered with
them since I got rid of the old
railroad bed," Varney said.

You often see women who ap
pear many years younger than
they are. However, you rarely
encounter a man who looks over
20 years younger than -he is.
Such a rarity is Dr. Gayelord
Hauser who is 77 years old
and appears to be about 45. How
has Hauser accomplished this?
He does not attribute it to diet.
He says it is all a question of
holding your stomach in. That,
he maintains is the secret of
eternal youth.

Housekeeping
A recent check reveals the
average French housewife spends
12 hours a day doing her house
work. This lengthy working day
is mostly due to the lack of
labor-saving, housekeeping de
vices In the average French
household. Only a few French
home managers have vacuum
cleaners, washing machines, au
tomatic electric irons, etc., etc.
The average American house
wife can finish her housekeeping

of aforementioned devices. I
hope your spouse appreciates
what a lucky girl she is not to
have to keep house in Paris.

Smoking
Only excessive cigarette
smoking can be classed as seri

a day. The worst chain smokers
are women. Many ;,moke more

her feelings after viewing an

Medford Scouts See
Sights in New York
(Editor's note: The following
letter was written for the Mail
Tribune by Stan Dowson, one of
63 Crater Lake area Boy Scouts
who attended the annual Boy
Scout Jamboree at Valley Forge.)
We just left New York and are
headed for Detroit. In New York,
the majority of the scouts saw
Rockefeller Center, Radio City,
where most of us took in a
movie, "The Silk Stockings,"
with the Rockettes and the
United States air force.
We also took a tour around
Manhattan, attended a ball game
and visited Coney Island. New
York was truly a great exper
ience with subways, lights and
skyscrapers.
It is good to be heading home
to the west and we'll be home
in a week.
