TWO MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday. Julr 28' 193 Cancer Workers for County Review Program Material A special meeting of the edu cational committee of the Ameri can Cancer society for all Jack son county was held at the home of Dr. Earl Lawson. 301 Windsor avenue. July 23. Mrs. Lawson, educational chairman, called the meeting of various Medford sub-chairmen and outlaying com munity chairmen in order to ac quaint them with the various types of literature available and the programs offered by the Cancer Society. The ACS has a new color film to offer for general public use this year entitled "The Other City," and Laurence Butler showed tins to the group. This is perhaps one cf the most drama tic of all the ACS films, it is said. It was made possible through the cooperation of a city of 75,000 people Racine, Wis. In startling sequences the film illustrates the tragedy of the 75, 000 who die of cancer needlessly each year. Racine symbolically becomes a silent city, without life, with the dishes still waiting to be washed, the bicycle wheels still spinning. And it pinpoints the ACS message through seven people seven danger signals. "It is a film that truly leaves a lasting impression," Mrs. Law son reports. The plan for bringing this film and others along with a doc tor speaker to all men's and women's organizations in the county was outlined by Mrs. Mahr Reymers, executive secre tary. Special literature and teachers kits are available for the school systems and will be distributed before the starting date this fall. She also stressed the other two phases of the so ciety's program research, which is brought to the county level through the ACS tumor registry and service, which has a large loan closet for cancer pa tients as well as furnishing dress ings to any cancer patient in the county. Those present for the meeting were Mrs. J. R. Bartuss, Eagle Point; Mrs. D. K. Bevens and Mrs. W. L. Huffman, Prospect; Mrs. E. L. Lenox, Medford; Miss Francis Clink, public health de partment; Mrs. A. C. Allen, Table Rock; Mrs. F. E. Holt, Ash land; Mrs. C. O. Long and Mrs. Gerald Stephens, Talent; Mrs. O. A. The AMERICAN INSTITUTE Ot FAMILY RELATION'S, 428J Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles 27. CaUIornia. Infatuation Or Love? Hovfc can I tell if I'm really In love? What is the difference between love and infatuation? Hundreds of people have writ ten to me asking if their love were genuine, and thousands of couples have brought the same question to the American In stitute of Family Relations in Los Angeles. Dena was in a desperate quan dary; she was in , love with two men, and she wasn't sure for which her feeling was genuine. One was the athletic director of the college; the other was her philosophy Instructor two more dissimilar types' could hardly "be found. Tests and coun seling revealed that her "love" was an infatuation, a fascination for their positions and prestige upon the campus. Marrying either would have been a mis take, for she was not truly in love. Dick was deeply attracted to a woman fifteen years his senior. What did age matter in the face of leva? His friends advised against marriage, urging him to think things over. "You're not in lo." they said. "You coufcr",'t really be in love with mjii old enough to be your motlar!" for a mother was wha ck saw in his fiancee. They fell in love by the end of the evening, and became en gaged the next day. Jt was a case of love at first sight but was it genuine love? Or a teen age crush, quick to bloom, swift to pass? How can you tell if love is love, or if the emotion you are experiencing is infatuation? Dr. Paul Popenoe, , director of the American Institute of Family Re lations, makes these suggestions: 1. Infaturation comes suddenly and ends shortly. Love takes more time in both coming and growing. 2. Infatuation depends strong ly on sex appeal. Love involves the whole personality and tem perament of the beloved. 3. Infatuation i m m o b ilizes, often leading to day dreams and loss of meaningful activity. Love spurs one on to greater effort and, in essence, "makes the world go 'round." 4. Infatuation changes when weakness or faults appear. Love remains and "alters not when it alteration finds." 5. Infatuation gives rise to In security, to doubts, to fears. Love produces a feeling of strength and stability, or self-confidence and power. 6. Infatuation is. often com pletely biological. Love is both spiritual and physical. 7. The infatuated is In love with love. The genuine lover is in love with a person. 8. Infatuation thinks of to day, and' is the emotion of a child. Love thinks of tomorrow and is the possibility of an emotionally mature adult. Newlywed Pair To Be Visitors Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Durling (Distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc.) Eight of the current top 10 re cordings are by male singers. The only females to get on this list of best sellers are Joni James and Patti Page. It was not like that in the olden days. I mean in the 1920s and '30s when Helen Morgan, Libby Holman. Belle Baker and Ruth Etting were vo calizing. And where can be found today a feminine . vocalist who could sell a song like Nora Bayes or Blanche Ring? Passing By Norma Malay. Sister of that brilliant poet, the late Edna St. Vincent Millay. It was when a very young woman that Edna, then living in Greenwich Vil lage, . attracted national atten tion with her poem about "burn ing the candle at both ends." In addition to being a clever writer, Miss Millay was an actress with the Provincetown Players dur ing the days that Eugene O'Neill was associated with that group . . . Robert Six. Ethel Merman's third husband. Mr. Six, a very clever executive, is an important figure in the passenger airline field. He recently bought 15 Vis count planes in England. These planes cost about SIVi million each. Pleasa Note As a publicity gag, a Las Vegas, Nev., gambling joint ex hibits in a glass case a pair of dice with which it alleges a patron made 28 straight passes. Suppose a gambling joint client started with a dollar bet and continued to let the money ride, how soon would the house call a halt. After 16 passes the man would be shooting for around $160,000. After 20 passes, he would be throwing for over a million dollars. Color Psychology Color psychologists continue to maintain that if a secretary plans to ask her boss for a raise or some special favor she should wear a blue polka dot dress on that occasion. The psychologists claim that will put the man in a pleasant, receptive mood. They advise against wearing a green dress. That, they say, iias an ir ritating effect on an executive. The color psychology experts also say if a school teacher wears a yellow dress she will find her pupils easier to handle. And, of course, they still say the color with me most male attracting power is watermelon pink. That a girl wearing a gown of that color will never be a wallflower. System A Californian, a student of and a believer in numerology, says he has had considerable suc cess with a system of playing thoroughbreds with seven-letter names. He asks my opinion of such a system. I can't go for any thing like that. I am strictly a form player. However it is in teresting to note the unusual number of great horses who have had seven-letter names. As for examples: Bull Lea, Bewitch, Man O' War, Assault, Sysonby, Tom Fool, Phalanx, High Gun, On Trust, Shut Out, Mahmoud, and Morvich. Little German Band Do you remember the little German bands that played on the sidewalks of New York and de rived their income from coins tossed to them by listeners in the neighborhood? If not cease calling yourself a Young Old Timer. Ever hear of Gucken- heimer's Sour Kraut Band? That is a present day amateur organ ization of San Francisco business men. The leader is Richard Gump, head of the celebrated department store of that name. This musical group of gay San Franciscans specializes in "Ger man band" music such as "The Hamburger Waltz," "D r 1 n k, Mein Liebling," "The Warum So Schnell Gallop," 'The Poet and Peasant Overture" and the "Skaters' Waltz."
