Ashland Fire Four men
were sent on a truck from the
Ashland fire department at
12:48 p.m. yesterday to extin
guish a grass fire at the Sam

st. The fire was caused by trash
barrel burning, firemen said.
Two Cited Two drivers were
cited by city police Tuesday fol
lowing an accident at the inter

Trash Extinguished Fire
men put out a trash fire in the
100 block of Laurel St., about
7:45 p.m. yesterday following
complaint of neighbors. The fire
was burning in prohibited hours,
firemen said. Report of a grass
fire, about 7:55 p.m. on Ellen
dale drive, turned out to be
a false alarm, firemen stated.
Nebraska Picnic The annual
Nebraska picnic for former resi
dents of that state now residing
in southern Oregon will be held
at 1 p.m. Aug. 4 in the Grants
Pass city park. Those attending
are to bring a pot'uck dinner
and table service, according to
the committee in charge. Coffee
and punch will be served and en
tertainment is planned. The for

Force has announced its jet in
terceptors are carrying new
guided missiles designed to de
stroy 70 to 90 per cent of enemy
bombers that come within their
lethal range.
That high kill rate was
claimed tor a new model of the
Falcon missile which is equip
ped with a heat-seeking device
that leads it to attacking air
craft.
The Air Force said the air
borne missile has knocked down
a dozen Matador pilotless bomb
ers in tests. The Matadors were
traveling near the speed of
sound when destroyed by Fal
cons which were not equipped
with warheads.
The Matador is an Air Force
bombardment missile designed
to carry atomic warheads sev
eral hundred miles.
The new Falcon senses at dis
tances of more than five miles
the infra-red radiation emitted
by invading aircraft. It differs
from earlier models which are
guided by their own radar.
Any Kind of Weather
The Air Force said both types
can be carried in interceptors to
'increase our air defense capa
bility." The radar guided ver
sion can track down an enemy
target in any kind of weather
while the infra-red model is
specially good against targets at
low altitudes where radar can
be avoided, Air Force spokes
men said.
The Falcon mi s s i 1 e s are
carried by F102 supersonic in
terceptors and F89 Scorpion
fighters. They will be used in
the new F101B interceptor
which flies well over 1,000 miles
an hour.
The Falcon was developed by
Hughes Aircraft Co. and is in
production at the Hughes-op
erated Air Force plant in Tuc
son, Ariz.

Tickets Go on Sale
Tickets for the Medford Foot
lighters' summer show. "Mr.
Angel," three-act comedy-fantasy
by Harry Segall, went on sale
today at Purucker's Piano House
and Swems, according to Mrs.
Max Wimmer, president.
The play, under the direction
of Frank Buchter, will open at
the fairgrounds theater Tuesday,
July 30, for a five-nieht run.
Newest addition to the cast of
13 is Richard Kline who will
play the part of Harrison, a
character detective.
The play, a deviation from the
ordinary offerings of the local
civic theater, is said to be the
"happiest choice we've ever
made for a summer play," ac
cording to Buchter.
Grants Pass Man
Injured in Accident
Keith Franklin Reynolds, 29
of Grants Pass, was hospitalized
last night for treatment of facial
injuries received in an auto ac
cident, according to city police.
, He was reported in good con
dition this morning at Rogue
Valley hospital, where he was
taken by Medford Ambulance
service.
Police said Reynolds suffered
a deep facial gash about 1:30
a.m. when his car collided on
West Jackson st. with two
parked vehicles owned by Lor-
cee M. Stevens, 604 West Jack
son St., and the Peerless Yeast
Co.
All three vehicles were dam
aged, officers said. City firemen
were called to flush away leak
ing gasoline.
Peck Brothers Tire
Firm Is Purchased
Two local men havS purchased
the Peck Brothers tire dealer
operation in Medford. They will
open business under a new
name Friday.
The new business, for which
articles of incorporation were
filed yesterday in Salem, will
be known as "Oregon Tire and
Supply company." Owners are
Harold Gregory, 609 Catherine
St., and Steven O. Wilson, Shady
Cove.
Gregory and Wilson have
bought fixtures and inventory at
the 2850 Crater Lake highway
address, and have leased' the
land.
Gregory lias been local man
ager for Peck Brothers.

forces July 23.

Ashland; and Charles Andrew
Nickle, Gold Hill, were inducted
at the Portland induction center,
and John Thomas Mallon, Cen
tral Point, was inducted through
the local board at Medford.

able to uncover a "solid clue"
that might lead them to a killer
who shot down two policemen
after they stopped him on a rou
tine traffic violation.
Confession Proves False
Police Capt. Lee Maxwell said
that the search for the killer has
swung back to Southern Cali
fornia after a confession
turned out to be a hoax and it
was disclosed that a different .22
caliber weapon killed three per
sons in New Mexico.
William T. Allen, 25, a former
inmate of a Chicago mental in
stitution, "confessed" to the
crime Wednesday in Oakland,
Calif. However, his description
didn't match that of the man
who murdered Officers Milton
G." Curtis, 25, and Richard A.
Phillips, 29, early Monday. De
tectives added that Allen gave
the wrong time for the slayings
and other details in his story
proved false. Officers said there
was only a "bare possibility"
Allen could be the right man.
Link Hoped
Officers had hoped to link the
slayings with the murder of
three persons in New Mexico.
The two policemen and the New
Mexico victims were killed with
a .22 caliber gun.
' Police obtained scientific proot
that a different .22 caliber weap
on killed two women and a truck
driver in New Mexico despite
the similarity of both shootings.
