r ! ;.- U) by Norman Weser " Now-guaranteed, ATHLETE'S FflflT "wonn...PonQoi 4 lo lead off this week, here's an advance report on a high-fidelity development which will be breaking in the news early this Fall: called the Studio Dynetic Phono Reproducer, the new unit consists of a cartridge and tone arm which can be used on many existing sets. It not only provides amazing reproduction but literally adds hundreds of plays to the life of your recordings. Watch for more on this come September. On the artist front, there's also news in the making. Felicia Sanders, who rode to disk fame via the Colum bia label, has switched to Mercury, while Anna Maria Alberghetti has shifted from Mercury to Capitol. Jeri Jordan, Bob Laurie, and Ike Cole, Nat (King) Cole's brother, have joined the Bally label and are already cutting their initial releases. TOPS ON THE RECORD SHELVES: Some weeks ago I said the next musical cycle would spotlight Hawaiian music, and now this prediction comes true with Decca's "The Magic Islands Music of Hawaii," featuring Al fred Newman and his orchestra and the Ken Darby Singers. You'll like the music, unusual sounds, and full-color illustrations in this package. MUSIC FOR FAMILY LISTENING: Let's begin our program with "Mickey Rooney Sings George M. Cohan," RCA's big Summer hit which is recommended for the entire family. Now we'll shift the mood, playing "Paris for Lovers," a new Mercury waxing by Eddie Barclay and his orchestra. And while we're abroad, try Epic's "A Touch of Argentina," with Hector Varela and his Tango Orchestra. Like piano? Then spin "A Fellow Needs a Girl" featuring the artistry of Joe Bushkin. This Capitol LP is most enjoyable. Follow with Epic's "Dance to the Music of Lester Lanin," one of the best straight dance sets released in a long while. Catch your breath now as Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy provide vocal tone poems on their Columbia etching, "Speaking of Love." COVERING THE CLASSICS: Tchaikovsky lovers will want to review the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra's "Aurora's Wedding" and "Black Swan Scene" as re corded by Mercury for the excellent Olympian series. Antal Dorati's deft direction makes this a collector's item. Capitol has a most interesting package in "Im pressions of Spain'' featuring the piano wizardry of Esteban Sanchez, and recorded in Barcelona. JAZZOMANIA: Dave Brubeck has been winning accolades for years, but we believe you'll find his new Columbia release, "Jazz Impressions of the U.S.A.," his best waxing effort to date. Noteworthy is the work of drummer Joe Morello, a recent addition to the quartet, and the blowing of Paul Desmond. "With Strings Attached" is an experiment in the modern mood which should attract a number of pops followers as well as jazzophiles. The Columbia effort Dave Brubeck features Wild Bill Davison and Deane Kincaidc con ducting the band. Another exciting release is Atlantic's "Lee Konitz Inside Hi-Fi." Superbly recorded, this disk features Konitz on his old standby, the alto sax, and, for the first time on records, he also plays a gutty tenor which his legions will welcome. rlCKIN' AND SINGIN': Country and Western fans have several good LPs to choose from these days. First, there's "Hank," a Capitol entry featuring Hank Thomp son and his fine orchestra. Then Columbia presents Marty Robbins singing "The Song of Robbins," and Marty's fans will like this one. Those two jesters, Homer and Jethro, sing "Barefoot Ballads," a new RCA package worth hearing. And for a single record, try Leon McAuliffe's "Little Girl, Go Ask Your Mama," bucked with "Carrol County," on the Cimarron label. 1 mm nr.
