Children and young persons with severe d i a b etes are not likely to be able to change over from insulin. The new drug is not for them. It is going to help a considerable percentage of the persons who got a mild type of diabetes some time after the age of 30. It is not good for persons with a severe or a complicated type of diabetes. Adjustment to the drug must be made carefully, with the help of an expert physician. The patient must not get anv idea in his head that with the help of the new pills he can go on an eating jag. That could easily bring disaster. The drug acts well for some persons, er ratically for others, and not at all for others. It can have un pleasant side-reactions, such as a skin eruption, hence its use must be watched. New Advances in Psychiatry I was interested to see the report that at the Chicago meet ing of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Robert G. Heath, Professor of psychiatry at lulane, warned that psychoana lytic treatment is not good for persons with "schizo-types," the common form of psychosis. Heath is reported as having said that schizophrenia is "a geneti cally determined metabolic dis ease:" in simple words, a heredi tary disease in which there is something wrong with the chem istry of the brain. Thank good-' ness, at last leading psychiatrists are having the courage to get up in meetings to 1) accept the results of research on heredity and 2) throw overboard many of the stupidities published for years by some of the analysts. A new day is dawning in psy chiatry, and a new type of psy chiatrist is coming to the fore. Statement Unpublished A while ago, when I wrote that in my wide experience, a large percentage of persons treated as neurotics are really mildly psychotic, I could not find anyone who would dare publish my statement. Now I Traffic Interviews Scheduled in Oregon Salein Oregon has been se lected as one of 10 states in which traffic interviews will be made to study the relationship between speed and highway ac The study is being made by the state highway department in cooperation with the U.S. bu reau of public roads. Actual speed checks and interviews on selected sections of highway will be made. Accident records for the same sections will be ana lyzed also. The study is being prompted by the disagreement between safety experts on the extent of speed as a factor in traffic acci dents which has resulted in widely varying speed zones across the nation, according' to the state highway department. Motorists Asked To Go Slow Near Parties Salem W. C. Williams, state highway engineer, has appealed to the driving public to slow down when near survey parties during the construction season. Crews occupied with transit work cannot properly watch for traffic, Williams said. For this reason drivers should slow down and drive carefully. Williams stated that signs and other precautions are used to warn motorists of a survey crew at work. Men in Dr. Heath"s group have gone on gathering more evi dence to show that schizophrenia is not due to the old unsupported theories of infantile mental in juries but to a chemical that has now been many times dem onstrated in the blood. Injected into a volunteer, it produces psychosis.
