Julr 13, 1957 Appointments To 3 Interim Groups Made by Governor Salem W Public appoint ments to legislative interim com mittees to study Oregon's com plex government by boards and commissions, qualification of coroners and judicial adminis tration were announced today by Gov. Robert D. Holmes. Streamlining of state govern ment will be studied by the committee to which the gov ernor named James Schick, For est Grove attorney; Charles Mc Kinley political science pro fessor at Reed College; Dr. Wal do Shumacher, professor of po litical science at the University of Oregon; and C. Richard Neely, La Grande attorney. Studying the qualifications for county coroners in Oregon will be Dr. Arch W. Diack, Port land physician; T. Lester John son. Sherman county district at torney; Fred S. Buell, Spring field representative of the Ore gon Coroners Association; and Richard N. O'Brien, Wallowa county sheriff. Twelve public members were named by the governor to the interim committee on judicial administration. They are Avery Thompson, Roseburg, Douglas county district attorney; John O. Nichols Salem, assistant at torney general; James Goodwin, Oregon City attorney; and Clyde Snider, Nyssa attorney. Eugen Professor Named Mrs. Sidney I. Asiatic Flu Cases Aboard MSTS Vessel Seattle UK A Military Sea Transportation Service ship from the Far East with 45 ambula tory cases of Asiatic influenza aboard docked here Thursday, the Navy said. Lt. Cmdr. R. E. Falcone, MSTS Information officer, said the ves sel had picked up its 1594 pass engers in Korea and Japan. Public Health Service offic ers said they would board the General W. A. Mann as soon as it docked and would clear the vessel before the patients were removed. HAD ENOUGH Chester, 111. W Lonnle S Porter Jr., Nashville. Tenn., truck driver, escaped injury whnti his truck and an auto col lided near here. A St. Louis, Mo., man was killed and three per ions were Injured. Porter started out later in the day with another Duck. It overturned down an embankment after hitting a patch of slick highway! Porter again was uninjured, but he gave up driving for the day. Mrs. Ernest Segessenman of Shady Cove left Monday for Eugene to visit her sister, Mrs. E. C. Vosson, who was to under go major surgery Tuesday. The Segessenman's daughter, Mrs. Chet Pfluke, and daughter, Jeanne Marie, are visiting from Santa Rosa, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice West and sons, Jim and Charles, of Chicago, visited Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Bates of Reese creek, Shady Cove, recently. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dunn and son,. Kenne, of Monterey, Calif., have been guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Sawyer of Shady Cove. The Dunns were formerly of Shady Cove and Gold Hill. He was superintendent of the quartermaster laundary at Camp White during World War II. Oth er guests of the Sawyers have been Mr. and Mrs. Ray Dunn and sons, Timothy and Christo pher of Inglewood, Calif. Mrs. Allyn Brandhorst and son, Dicky, and daughter, Nancy Kershner, made a trip to Port land where they visited Mrs. Brandhorst's daughter and fam ily, Mr. and Mrs. Richardson Shoemaker. They went on to Seattle to visit Mrs. Brandhorst's sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Brink. Brandhorst's mother, Mrs. Alma Brandhorst of Portland returned with Mrs. Brandhorst Jr., for a visit in Shady Cove. Making a trip to Walsh's lake Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Elrod and daughter, Mary Ann, of Trail. The Elrods took with them on the trip Joan and Kathleen Houston, Sharon Rob erts and Toni Miller. Mrs. Sabra George of Jack sonville is visiting her brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Art Levulett of Shady Cove. Other recent guests of the Levulett's have been Mrs. Levuiett's niece and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Dan ny Machado, of Sacramento, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. William Wiese and children, Laura and Billy, of Glendale, Calif., are house guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Barrett of Shady Cove. Louis Morgan of Alton, 111., spent five days recently visiting his sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Miller, of Trail. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Steacy and children, Lynda, Jimmy and Robby, of San Pablo, Calif., are visiting Mrs. Steacy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Howe, of Trail. Mrs. Rod Perry and Children, Larry and Debbie, of Trail are spending a few days in Dayton visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hidinger. Mrs. Violet Hollis of Alham- bra, Calif., is visiting her niece and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hopkins of Shady Cove. Charles Boatwright of Shady Cove is still confined to the Rogue Valley hospital for ob servation and medical treat ment. ' ' Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Silvers of Shady Cove have had Mrs, Sil ver's niece' and family, Mr.-and Mrs. Ralph Mattson and son, of Bend, visiting them. The regular meeting of the Young Citizen's club of Shady Cove-Trail was held recently at the Parish hall. Plans for a hay ride for club members and their dates were completed. Mrs. Wendell Stalker of Shady Cove has returned from Prairie City, Ore., and brought her mother-in-law, Mrs. J. C. Stalk er, of Prairie City back with her for a visit. Mrs. Stalker also has her nephew, Charles Sar gent, of Alamo, Tex., visiting her. Mrs. Charles Morehead of Trail has returned from San Francisco. The Moreheads have had Mrs. Morehead's son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Stump, and daughter, Janet, from Richmond, Calif., as house guests. Mr. and Mrs. Saul Kyser ol San Francisco and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hearne of Pleasant Hill, Calif., have been visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Young of Trail. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Brown have returned to their home in Shady Cove after a two-week vacation trip. They went to Reno. Nev., Salt Lake City, Grand Teton National park and Yellowstone. At Davenport, Wash., they visited Brown's nephew and family, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Brown. From there they went to Sevarup, Wash., where they visited Brown's cousin and family, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Dodge. They also visit ed Mrs. Brown's sister and fam ily, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph War ren, at Dorena, Ore. Mrs. Colleen Olson of El So brante, Calif., is visiting her mother, Mrs. Leona Hlnkle, of Trail. Guests staying at Playtime-on-the-Rogue this past week have been Mr. and Mrs. John Kliemer and sons, James and John, of North Hollywood, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Allan Royer of Burbank. Calif.; and Mr. and Mrs. John Frampton of Orinda, Calif. John Frampton is a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Frampton of Trail. Mrs. Clayton Knotts and chil dren are spending the summer visiting relatives in Eugene. Clayton Knotts is working with the Rev. Ron Curren in Alaska. Howard A r e n t and son, Michael, of Medford were guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Kelley of Shady Cove. Other guests were Mrs. Kelley's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. M. Madsen of Medford. Mrs. Ralph Ferguson and chil dren of Clairmont, Calif., have been visiting at the home of Mrs. Ferguson's' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Burt Craven, of Trail. Cattle Population Increases I Per Cent Lincoln, Neb. (U The world's cattle population is 937, 000,000 head an increase of one per cent over last year. According to. Foreign Agricul ture service, cattle numbers are 20 per cent above the 1946-50 average and 24 per cent above the 1936-40 average. The service said there are an estimated 919,000,000 sheep in the world. This is two per cent more than last year and 29 per cent more than the 1946-50 aver age. AEC Discounts Story Of Gag Credentials Presented by Writer Las Vegas (IP) The Atomic Energy Commission has labeled as "ridiculous" a reporter's claim that he entered the atomic test grounds in Nevada to witness Monday's "Diablo" shot by showing gag credentials includ ing one card good for a free drink at a Las Vegas bar. Reporter Pat Michaels, of the Orange County News Service and radio station KWIZ in Santa Ana, Calif., Wednesday said he got past security guards at Camp Mercury by showing the free drink card, another which certi fied he was a back seat driver and several personal cards. He jsaid he also was not questioned about a satchel he carried into the area. Lt. Col. William R. Hunter, director of the AEC's test in formation office v said Michaels last week requested to witness the test and his credentials were checked and cleared. Hunter said the reporter's name was placed on a list of authorized news media observers. "When Michaels arrived at the test site he was issued his badge at my request," Hunter said. "He together with n eth er news observers were under security escort every minute on the test site." Hunter said Michaels was not ' questioned about his brief case because all authorized newsmen are permitted to carry items necessary to do their work on News Nob in the test area. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Six and children, Claudia and Linda of Inglewood, Calif., have been house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chubb and family. Starting Sunday, July 21, for four successive Sundays, the Rev. Rob Roy Hardin will con duct the Episcopalian church services at the school house in Shady Cove. Services will be held at 9 a.m. The dates of the services will be July 21, 28, Aug. 4 and Aug. 11. The follow ing two Sundays, Aug. 18 and 25 the morning services will be conducted by the Rev. Robert L. Greene who will be vaca tioning at Union Creek. Mrs. Dale Sawyer announced that the next Guild meeting will be the first Monday in August at the home of Mrs. A. Myklebye just above Sunset - on - the - Rogue, Trail, starting at 8 p.m. Mrs. Charles Boatwright of Shady Cove has had her grand daughter, Glenna, of Central Point visiting the Boatwright family. George Pfeifer is confined to the Mitchell Sanitarium at Jack sonville and may have visitors. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pfeifer are now living at Ft. Lewis, Wash., where Jack is stationed. Tommy Porcher, son of Mr. anH Mrs. Rov Porcher of Elk creek, Trail, killed a 2Vi-foot timber rattlesnake while help ing cut hay on the ranch. The snake had 11 rattles. Mr.' and Mrs. Jack Carlton and daughters of Trail, together with Mrs. Carlton's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Plankerhorn of Ashland, spent a few days vacationing at Lake of the Woods. Mr. and Mrs. Herb Carlton of Trail, are vacationing in southern California.
