Two Committees
For Interim Study

Gov. Robert D. Holmes.
Three public members of the
nine-member interim education
study committee named by the
governor are Elizabeth Ducey,
Portland; Leo Marlantes, Sea
ride, and Mrs. Paul Buck, Klam
ath Falls.
Problems of migratory labor
in Oregon will be tackled by a
committee including four public
members appointed by the gov
ernor. They are Dr. Hoyt Fran
chere, Oswego, head of the div
ision of humanities at Portland
State College; Lawren King, On
tario, a Malheur county rancher
who employs migrant workers;
Dr Daniel Wessler. Corvallis,
head of the Presbyterian founda
tion; and Dean Holmes, editor
Several areas of study are
ahead for the education commit
tee. The resolution calling for its
creation asked study of elemen
tary and high school district
minimum standards, reorganiza
tion, finance, in-service training,
curriculum development and vo
cational needs, and investigation
of post high school education
problems including extent and
manner of assistance for com
munity colleges authorized also
by the legislature.

Hearing Scheduled
For Land Reserve
Portland W A plan to
reserve 5017 acres of public land
to provide public access to fish
ing spots on the Deschutes river
will be aired at The Dalles at a
public hearing Aug. 23.
The Federal Fish and Wildlife
service had requested the with
drawel in cooperation with the
Oregon State Game commission.

ervisor of the Bureau of Land
Management, said the acreage
lies along both banks of the Des
chutes between the abandoned
Union Pacific railroad tracks
and the Oregon Trunk line track
from Sherars bridge to near
Freebridge, Ore. The abandoned
railroad bed would be used for
an access road.

Trip Around World

seafaring adventuers aboard
their amphibious Jeep "Half
Safe" resumed the next leg of a
round the world trip Thursday.

ter a hazardous 1,300-mile North
Pacific crossing from Japan's
Hakkaido Island.
Next stop will be Homer, Al
aska, with perhaps a few un
scheduled stops along the way
on the Aleutian chain, Carlin

From Homer it will be on to
Anchorage, then Seattle, down
the coast to San Francisco and
Los Angeles, and finally across
the continent to Montreal, where
Carlin began his Odyssey seven
years ago.

President Would Like
Documents in Library

Eisenhower said Wednesday he
would like his official and per
sonal papers placed in the Eisen
hower Libary planned to be es
tablished in his home town of
Abilene, Kan.
However, the President told
his news conference that he
wanted to keep his personal pa
pers during his lifetime.
Eisenhower also expressed a
wish that any paper or letter in
which he may have "spoken dis
paragingly of someone still
alive" would be kept secret until
that person had died.

Employees association at Rose
burg, Saturday, July 20, at 9:30

the Umpqua hotel.
The session is designed for

course covers record keeping,
wage surveys, classification
