Milwaukee Out Game; Yankees Br MILTON RICHMAN Uniltd Press Sports Writer Note to those irate Milwaukee fans who hanged Fred Haney in effigy the other day: It's okay, fellas, you can cut him down now. The suddenly steamed-up Braves, winners in six of their last eight games, are a full game ahead of the National league pack today so that should make everything hunky-dory with all Milwaukee burghers right now. Brooklyn remained IVi games off the pace by beating St. Louis, 10-9, in an 11-inning con test, while Cincinnati nipped the Giants, 2-1, and Pittsburgh de feated Chicago, 6-5. Yanks Running Away The Yankees opened up a five game lead in the American league, their biggest margin of the year, with a 3-2 victory over in 1956, the Glendaie Loggers are not hankering for another setback such as the 18 to 1 lick' ing they took from Medford at the start of the season. And the evidence doesn't point for such a repeat. The Loggers have added talent, look stranger and are tougher than at the start of the campaign. Won Four Straight Glendaie . comes to Medford with four straight RVL victories after losing its first three league games and so has developed the winning habit. Shortstop and Manager Tom Prestiani with a .481 hitting av erage, outfielder and pitcher Bob Stolz with .400, catcher Ray Munyon with .367 and outfielder Fred Spellings with .300 have been the siege guns in the loop for Glendaie. Despite these wallopers Med ford will present a healthier team hitting average. The Studs as a team have an average of .337 in league play to lead in the department while Glendaie ranks fourth with .256. Dwayne Miller, with a 3-1 league record for 19 23 innings in action, may be the Logger hurler for the afternoon. He's yielded 17 hits, 10 runs and 11 bases on balls and has struck out 24. Other Glendaie pitchers are Bob Stolz, Ted Brown and Leroy Moschkau. Stolz has pitched only one inning in the loop for the Loggers cut nas one of his teams victories. After Third Verdict Jerry Bartow probably will get the Studs' mound assignment and a chance to try for a third RVL triumph. He has a 2-0 rec ord, has yielded 12 hits, four runs and four bases on balls in 19 innings and has whiffed bat ters 27 times. Wayne Berg is the likely first baseman for Glendaie with Bill Walton, second, Fred Snelhngs, third, Tom Prestiani, shortstop and Stolz, Tom Reynolds and Dan Densley or B. Smart, out fielders. For Medford the probables are Jack Cooney, first base, Lar ry Perkins, second, Frack Rec tor third, Ron Owings, short stop, and Ed Reinking, John Kovenz and Jerry Droscher, outfielders. That blow tied him with Ralph Kiner and Rogers Horhs by for the all-time National league leadership and it came in the last of the ninth to tie the score after St. Louis had pushed across seven runs in the top of the inning. Duke Snider, who homered in the third inning, doubled in the 11th and scored the winning run on Ed Kasko's error. Roger Craig was the win ner. Gus Bell provided Cincinnati with enough runs to win when he hit a two-run homer off Stu Miller in the third inning. John ny Klippstein held the Giants scoreless until Bobby Thomson opened the ninth with a homer. When Ed Bressoud followed with a single, Raul Sanchez re lieved Klippstein and got the final three outs. .The -Pirates 'won their game from the Cubs with a four-run rally in the ninth. Bill Mazeros ki's infield single with the bases loaded scored Dick Groat with the winning run. Ernie Banks and Chuck Tanner each hit in side - the - park homers for the Cubs. Reliever Luis Arroyo was the winning pitcher. Southpaw Billy Hoeft of the Tigers was working on a 2-0 lead when he ran afoul of a three-run rally by the Yanks in the eighth. With two out Jerry Coleman singled and Mickey Mantle walked. Yogi Berra then singled for one run and Hank Bauer doubled for two more. Al Ciccotte, the third of four Yankee pitchers, gained the vic tory. Pinch Single Wins Billy Goodman's pinch single with the bases loaded, good for two runs, was the big blow in Baltimore's ninth-inning assault against lefty Jack Harshman of the White Sox. Oriole relief ace George Zuverink gave up one hit in the last two innings after taking over for starter Billy O'Dell to post his ninth triumph. Yacht Race Trophy Won By Legend Honolulu (IP) The sloop Leg end from Newport, Calif., clinched the Transpacific Yacht Race handicap trophy today when a 40-foot yawl considered her closest potential rival was sighted 150 miles from the fin ish line. The yawl was the British en try, Kochab, skippered by Joljn Franklen - Evans of London. It had not been heard irom for four days and race officials thought it might be trying a sneak finish to nose out the Legend. However, the Class D boat did not show by the handicap dead line Thursday afternoon, there by assuring the Legend the vic tory. The Coast Guard cutter Gresham found the. Kochab on Thursday. It had failed to re port in the past few days be cause of radio transmitter trou ble. The yawl is due tonight, well out of the handicap race. The Legend sailed the 2,225 nautical mile course from Long Beach, Calif., to Honolulu in a corrected time of 11 days and 41 minutes. Robin Sorry About Beef Philadelphia (IP) Robin Rob erts, big right hander for the Philadelphia Phillies said today he was "sorry" as he started the first day of a three-day suspen sion for almost slugging umpire Jocko Conlan. Roberts, known around the league for his mild manners and gentlemanly ways, was slapped with his first suspension and a $50 fine Thursday by National League President Warren Giles. It stemmed from a disagreement between Roberts and. Conlan over a decision he made Wednes day night during the Phils Braves game. New Britain, Conn. Rifle Shoot This Sunday Veterans of Foreign Wars Rifle and Pistol club of Medford will have another big bore rifle shoot on Sunday, July 21, at the range at Camp White. Members are asked to be on hand at 6:30 a.m. when the range will open. The club has extended an in vitation to "any good sports man interested in shooting to join the rifle organization. PETERSON United Press Sports Editor Dayton, Ohio (IP) Once again its old Slammin' Sammy Snead against the field in the PGA golf championship. While such favorites as Doug Ford, Walter Burkemo, Tommy Bolt, Dick Mayer and Mike Sou chak still were 'in the running as the 16 survivors teed off to day for the first of two more rounds of 18-hole sudden-death matches, it was the 45-year-old links artist from West Virginia that everyone was watching. Playing anything but like his age, he found the hilly 6,773- yard Miami Valley golf course to his liking as he paced' the field into the round of 16 with some of the best golf of his career. He was 10 under par for the 47 holes it took him to beat his first three opponents. The executive comittee of tha Santa Clara county fair board decided Thursday the show will go on despite the opposition of State Assemblyman Glenn E. Coolidge of Santa Cruz. Cooudge reminded the com mitteemen on Wednesday that every county fair in California receives money from the state legislature which, he noted, is opposed to bullfights. He is the author of an anti-bullfight law which does not become ef fective until September. Contract Binding However, the executive com mittee decided to take no action after county counsel William Straub advised that its contract with the Spanish-American as sociation of San Lorenzo if bind ing. The association is sponsoring the bullfight, which features three matadors and 12 Mexi can bulls. Jose H. Priego, treasurer of the association, said the bull fight .is going to be held. "They just play with the ani mals," he said. "It's cleaner than a rodeo." The 12 bulls are due to arrive in San Jose from Laredo, Tex., today or Saturday. YANKEE TIES Edinburgh, Scotland IIP) G. W.
