Ashland Youth Takes Grand Prize in First Porcupine Contest John A. Bowman, School House ranch, Ashland, with a total of 361 porcupines, won the first grand prize, a Winchester automatic shotgun, during the first year of a campaign to re duce the porcupine population in Jackson county sponsored jointly by the Medford Kiwanis odub and the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. The winner of the second grand prize, a pair of binoculars, was Ronald Scholer, star route box 77, Ashland, with 188 por cupines. Clara Jean Fink, for merly of Eagle Point, now liv ing in Areata, Calif., won third prize, a scope-mounted 22 rifle, with a total of 182 porcupines. Fourth Quarter Winners Winners of the prizes for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 1957 were Ronald Scholer, 39 porcupines; John A. Bowman, 32 porcupines; and Roland Pey ton, Coleman Creek rd., Med ford, 22 porcupines. Prizes con sisted of various Items of camp ing equipment. The year-long contest was limited to youths from 12 to 18 years of age who are resi dents of Jackson county. Youths who entered the contest for the prizes during the year account ed for a total of 2,399 por cupines. Money for the prizes, which were displayed throughout the year at the various sporting goods stores In Medford, Ash land and Central Point, was do nated by 13 lumber concerns in Jackson county. Bounty on Noses In addition to prizes, Jackson county paid a bounty of $1 for each porcupine nose. The county clerk reported that 6,946 por cupine bounties' was paid during the year. The Prospect office of Elk Lumber company also paid $1 bounty. The. office re ported a total of 629 porcupines accounted for during the year through their company. Foresteri have estimated that a porcupine during its lifetime damages timber stands, mostly young ponderosa pine trees, to the extent of at least $200 in value. If this amount is multi plied by the number of porcu pines killed during the past year, the first year of the cam paign has resulted in a long term benefit to the county's for est economy of approximately $1,500,000, according to the Ki- Radar Pictures 01 Stale Weather New Forecast Tool Chicago W Radar pictures of state-wide weather systems are being developed as a tool for forecasting thunderstorms and tornadoes. Two University of Chicago ex perts say that radar shows clear er how one-mile wide clouds ex pand Into larger weather group ings that often spawn severe storms. The researchers are Tetsuya Fujita, research associate,' and H. Albert Brown, instructor at the department of meteorology. Radar photos taken every minute form a graphic biography of four such storm systems they studied. The weather pattern is known as a mesosystem, which extends from 10 to 200 miles in radius. According to Fujita and Brown, the beginning of a meso aystem is a column of water con densation in the atmosphere a mile wide and two miles high. ' These tiny water droplets of condensation, growing in size and number, form a dense bar rier that reflects radar waves. Cloud Sequence Radar photos show that the condensation grows into a small cloud that disappears in about 20 minutes. Then several new ones form, grow larger and dis appear again. The entire se quence often is repeated for as long as 12 hours, the research showed. ' Fujita and Brown said the situation occurs in areas of high winds, pressure changes and pre cipitation. The original column of con densation is fed by water vapor rising on currents of warm air until the condensation droplets reach a critical size and fall as rain. The falling rain, evaporating as it plummets earthward, leaves behind a large mass of cold air, which minutes later sinks to the ground under its own weight and causes surface temperatures to drop as much as 30 degrees, the meteorologists said. On the radar screen, the dissi pating cloud can be seen to dim inish and vanish. But at. the same time new ones are born in its path. These dissipate and are replaced by newer and big ger ones until at last a squall . line, or echelon of thunderstorms is formed. Fujita and Brown believe the small, 1 5 - mile - wide cyclones often associated with tornadoes probably result from swirling eddies of' air and moisture formed by the high winds in the wanis club. Despite the large number of porcupines killed during the past year the animals are still plentiful so the Medford Ki wanis club is considering spon soring another contest and offer ing prizes for youths in the county. Reduced Bounty Jackson county also will con tinue to pay a bounty. How ever, it will be reduced to 50 cents per nose instead of $1 This action was taken because Klamath county is offering a bounty for the first time. Since the Klamath bounty is 50 cents and since the two counties are adjacent Jackson county chang ed to 50 cents so that the amount of the bounties would be the same. Prizes were awarded to the winners at the July 17 meeting of the Kiwanis club and all the winners have been invited to appear on television at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 1, with Ki wanians Jennings Pierce and Chester Wendt.
