July 17. 1957 o Development Project Director Will Visit Area Library System Dr. Morton Kroll. director of the library development project of the Pacific Northwest Library association, will spend Thurs day. July 25, in Medford, ac cording to information received by Miss Helen E. Webster, li brarian. Dr. Kroll plans to spend the day talking to Miss Webster and to trustees of the Medford pub lic and Jackson county library about several matters pertain ing to library development in Jackson county. Selected for Study Since the Medford public li brary was selected in February for study by the library develop ment project, a number of ques tionnaires have been forwarded to Seattle on such subjects as revenue, salary schedules, ex penditures, and concernins the community served by the li brary, its population, economic base, and other factors. Dr. Kroll s visit is the first of sev eral planned. The library development proj ect of the Pacific Northwest Li brary association is concerned with the study of library facli ties and services in the Pacific Northwest (British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington). The project is conducting its work over a two-year period, ending June 30. 1958, and is fi nanced by a $60,000 grant from the Ford Foundation. Headquar ters for the project are on the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle. Vet's Widow May Receive Gl Loan The service-connected death of a World War II or Korean conflict veteran may entitle his widow to a GI loan, even if the veteran had obtained a GI loan before he died, according to S. T. Brannock, officer in charge of the local Veterans adminis tration office. , 1 . . . However, Brannock warned, if the widow herself is an eligible veteran, she accrues no addi tional GI loan rights because of ()ier husband's death. Widows of World War II" or lorea veterans whose death was service-connected also may ob tain direct loans from VA in cer tain areas eligible for direct lcns. Direct loans may be made for the purchase of a home or farm house, or farm land. The law does not authorize direct busi ness loans. GI loan applications from Widows, based on their hus bands' deaths as a result of tr'orld War II service, must be ide by July 25, 1958. For Ko T0in conflict eligibility, loans must be made before Feb. 1, 195. Brannock said. New Type of Training for Korea Vets Approved by VA A new type of apprentice training, recently approved for Korea veterans by the Veterans administration, may help add urgently-needed 'engineering tal ent to American industry, S. Employees not entitled to vacations and the maintenance crews did the necessary repair work through out the plant. Work was resumed in all departments. Monday, July 15. Mrs. Mildred Luper of Sacra mento is a guest at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Luper and family. Mr. and Mrs. "Shino" Marin and children returned home Thursday after spending the past two weeks vacationing in southern California and along the California coast. Cavin and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Don Wilcox and children went on a picnic on the Salmon river near Somes Bar Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Graves visited at the home cf ' their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Jorgenson and children in Woodland during their vacation. They also visited friends in the Bay area return ing to Ono, Shasta county, where they spent the remainder of their vacation at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Philip York and son, another son-in-law and daughter. Colombia Violence Leaves 102 Victims Bogota. Colombia W At least 102 persons were killed last week in a new eruption of violence throughout Colombia, according to reports today. An official statement reported 80 deaths. Unofficial reports said an additional 22 persons were killed in "outlaw" attacks on the town of Cajamarca in the state of Tolima. Interior Minister Jose Maria Villareal recently expressed confidence that an agreement would soon be reached to norma lize the situation in the eastern plains where large armed groups still are active. N o w, engineers sometimes spend much time at duties that couid well be performed by others who have less profession al training, Brannock said. Apprentice Trainees Approved by VA for veterans employed by the General Elec tric company as apprentice train ees, the special apprenticeship consists of "learn while you work" training on-the-job plus two years of regular credit-earning college courses in the eve ning all in various phases of engineering. Veterans entering this appren tice program must meet all quali fications necessary to enter col lege. Their two years of evening .classroom work will count to ward an engineering degree, should they wish to continue studies, Brannock said. The evening courses will be identical with those taught full time day students. Engineering Design The job training portion of the course includes more , than 5.000 hours of engineering de sign, 1,700 hours of drafting and nearly 1,000 hours of machine shop. Throughout the program, vet erans will receive apprentice wages, stepped up periodically, as well as monthly Korean GI bill training allowances. Normally, Brannock explain ed, the states approve courses for veterans under the Korean GI bill. But when a course is to be offered in more than one state, as is the case with General Electric. VA itself has authority under the law, to handle GI ap-oroval. Pope Planning Trip To Escape Weather Vatican City TO Pope Pius XII will leave the Vatican for his summer villa at Castel Gan Dolfo Saturday, 10 days earlier than planned. Vatican sources said today. The 81-year-old pontiff was be lieved to have advanced his schedule to escape from the de bilitating Rome heat. Tempera tures in the high, 90s already have been registered in Rome and police estimated more than 200 deaths throughout Italy re sulted because of the recent heat wave. Lower Payments on Housing Are Delayed Washington (IB Adminis tration sources said today the government will not immediately lower down payments on federal backed home loans despite new authority to do so. The sources said FHA Com missioner Lowell P. Mason will issue a statement later this week refusing to lower down payments at least until next fall because of inflationary dangers. The administration had been considering an immediate cut as authorized under legislation re cently signed by President Eisenhower.
