Mayo Foundation Or Alvarex Itching Skin Many persons ask what to do for an itching skin. Obviously, the person should see a skin specialist who will promptly check to make sure that he hasn't diabe tes, or Hodg kins disease, or extreme n e r v ousness, or any of the other troubles that cause wide-spread itching. The doc tor, of course, will make sure that there is no local disease of the skin.-Itching between the fingers or in the groins can be due to the tiny itch-mite. Itch ing between the toes can be due to the mold that produces so called athlete's foot. Itching of the shins of older persons in cold weather is due to a lack of sufficient oil in the skin. It is washed out in the morning bath, and the cure is to rub some cold cream or oil into the skin every day. . Itching in the crotch calls for careful examination, often by several specialists. In a bie clinic the skin specialist, the gynecologst, the rectal special ist, the psychiatrist and the in ternist may all have to consult on the problem. Often the local itching is due in part to nervous ness, and perhaps a psychic con flict. For instance, in the last case of a terrible itching of the crotch I saw, the woman was trying to make up her mind to divorce her husband. When she made a definite decision not to do this, the itching left. Uterine Fibroids Every week a number of women ask me if they must have their fibroid tumor out. Usually they say that it hasn't bothered them in any way, and was discovered accidentally on a routine examination. They haven't been flooding; they are not anemic, and they have no pain. I am happy to note that, today, most of these women tell me that at least one or two of the surgeons they have con sulted have advised against an operation. It was silent, and they did not have any fear that it would turn into cancer. Espe cially when a woman ii in her twenties or thirtes and wants children, no surgeon wants to remove her womb. Commonly, a hysterectomy doesn't do much harm, but we must face the fact that In some cases the woman becomes de pressed and moody and unhap py; she may feel that her useful life is ended, and she may lose her sexual interest, thereby los ing her husband. Because there are these dangers I see no sense in operating unless there is a definite reason for it. I am so happy that today more and more gynecologists are saying that the mere pres ence of a fibroid or myomatous (muscular) nodule on the uterus is not an indication for surgery. We should remember that every third white woman has some fibroids, and every other colored woman has them. These nodules are made of muscle, much like the muscle in the rest of the uterus. The lump is not cancer ous, and it very rarely changes into cancer. This happening is so rare that I cannot remember ever having seen a case of it. Sometimes the presence of myomas seems to interfere with a woman's ability to conceive, but I have known women with a good-sized tumor on the womb to have several children.
