The Padres were good for two
runs in the seventh, but the Bea

league baseball players who have
had 15 or more times at bat.
Ha has had 12 hits in 23 turns
at bat for a .522 average and
leads also in runs batted in with
15.
The statistics include all games
for the first half of the league
.season with the exception of the
Camp White-Talent game last
Wednesday. Figures on that
tussle were turned in incomplete.
The record sheet has been sent
back for filling in of the miss
ing details.
Maurers' tabulation is for six
games. Jim MeAbee. Ashland
Talent catcher, followed the
Cave Junction man with a .500
mark for four games on eight
hits in 16 trips to the plate. Dick
Wooton, Camp White, has com
piled a .476 record on 10 hits in
21 times up in four games re
ported. Jack Cooney is fourth in the
overall status and heads the

service with 28. He is tops in
strikeouts with 32 while Sides
has 29.
One of the better mound show
ings has been by Larry Cochell,
Grants Pass, (2-1). Third in point
of activity with 27 2 3 innings,
he has been responsible for only
12 hits and six runs. -
Medford is in front in team
batting with .350. Cave Junc
tion is .305, Grants Pass .260,
Talent .257, Glendale .255, Camp
White .217, and Butte Falls .162.
Talent is front-runner in dou
ble plays with six.
Grants Pass, with 57, has had
the most men stranded on bases.
Medford and Cave Junction,
with 37 each, have had the few
est left on.

on Monday with Medford trying
to keep unbeaten leadership.
The Medford crew will enter
tain the Grants Pass Cubs in the
2 p.m. game. Grants Pass Bears
will be at home to Ashland.
On Tuesday the Pee Wee
southern division teams start
their second time around against
each other with the Medford
Tigers at Ashland and Central
Point meeting the Wildcats at
Medford. The Tigers will be
hosts to Central Point on Thurs
day while Ashland competes at
Eagle Point.
Central Point vies at Medford
on Wednesday in the Intermedi
ate circuit. An Ashland game
at Talent is subject to arrangement.

these days," is developing into
some shakes as a lightweight
campaigner.
The tough little New England
er continued his fast rise up the
fistic ladder Friday night by
slashing his way to a sixth-round
technical knockout over Lulu
Perez of Brooklyn, N.Y., in their
nationally-televised fight.
It was the 21st knockout vic
tory in 43 pro fights for Gomes,
who weighed 130 pounds. He
was the 7-5 favorite. Perez scaled
12914.

Jones Hurls
Two-Hitter

Sam Jones loves to chew on
toothpicks and maybe that ain't
etiquette, but the St. Louis Card
inals aren't fussy as long as he
can help them sink their teeth
into some World Series melon
this fall.
Jones munched on a toothpick
all Friday night while pitching
a two-hitter against the New
York Giants in a 5-1 victory that
kept the Cards two games ahead
in the National League pennant
race.
For a time Friday night, it ap
peared the hard-throwing St.
Louis right hander might be en
route to the second no-hit game
of his big league career. He
pitched one such game for the
Cubs against the Pirates, May
12, 1955, and he was working on
another one Friday night until
Whitey Lockman singled off his
glove with two out in the sixth
inning.
The only other hit he yielded
was Willie Mays' 14th homer in
the ninth but by that time, home
runs by Stan Musial, Alvin
Dark and Don Blasingame had
insured Jones' third victory in
a row and seventh of the campaign.
There are five divisions, jun
iors, boys, pee wees, girls and
junior girls. The tourney is be
ing played without handicap.
There will be trophies for first,
second and third gross in boy's
divisions and first and second
gross in the girls' brackets.
Juniors may play practice
rounds at RVCC today after 4
p.m.
There will be different pair
ings each day.
