Julr 12. 19S7 The Medical Roundup fr. Head Noises Hundreds ask what to do for head noises, and l am sorry I cannot tell them. First, I don't know the cause of their par ticular type of head noise; I don't know where it is b e i ng pro duced. It may be a r ising in the ear or in the nerve run ning from the ear to the brain, or in the brain, or in a throbbing artery near the inner ear. Second, it I did know where and how the noise was being produced, 1 might not be able to do anything about it. In a recent number of Today's Health, there was an article by Dr. Albert P. Seltzer on this subject. As he says, deaf people with their abnormal ears are the ones most likely to get head noises, but so-called tinnitus oc curs even in people with good hearing. The sounds vary. Some are soft and purring, some are whist ling, some tinkle like a little bell, some are fairly loud or throb bing, or roaring; some may be buzzing, rumbling, grinding, or metallic, and often they resemble steam escaping from a pipe. In some cases, the noise is con stant; in others it is intermittent; some persons get it only when they are falling asleep, some get it in one ear and some get it in both. A purring sound that coines 70 to 80 times a minute is due to the beating of the big artery which passes close to the inner ear. As Dr. Seltzer says, there are many causes for head noises, and the patient should go to a good ear man to see if he can determine the cause, or can sug gest anything to do about it. Understanding May Help It may help persons to under stand the problem when they learn how we hear. First, the sound waves in the air go through the external auditory canal to strike the thin ear drum, causing it to v i b rale. With the help of three tiny in erlocking bones in the middle ear, these vibrations are trans mitted to a small window which leads into the hearing mech-1 anism in the inner ear. This j last mechanism resembles a tiny marimba. From each resonator of the marimba a nerve fiber goes to the brain. Obviously, then, ear noises may be due to something wrong in the several parts of the ear: in the nerve going to the brain, or in the brain, or in the big artery near the ear. Occasionally, they are influenced by a plug ging or tne eustacman luoe that carries air from the throat to the middle ear. When we swallow, and allow air to go into the middle ear, our ear noise may stop for a while. Oc casionally, head noises are due to an accumulation of wax in the external canal. Many a time I have cured a man of deafness in Threatening Note Clue in Disappearance Homedale, Idaho (If) Sheriff i Jim Tucker has revealed that j a threatening note was found i in the office of Homedale City I Clerk and Police Judge Bertha Ehrhart, 39, just shortly after she disappeared Monday night. An intensive searcn nas been j under way for the woman since I early Tuesday morning. Drag- i ging operations in the Snake j river near Homedale, blood-', hounds and an airplane failed to i turn up any trace of the miss- j ing woman. j Tucker said the note was found in the woman's purse which had been left in her of fioe at the city hall Monday. Police Chief Jim Hill said the note was made up of words clipped from newspapers and magazines and pasted on note paper. It read: "You have only a few days to live." r Mall Tribun Wnt .1 The Low Coat Way to Sell KBOY 13 KC (All program at tain time dally. unless otherwise Indicated) A.M. 5:45 Sirn en. Mayo Foundation a few minutes simply by wash ing out a lot of wax packed into his auditory canal. Infection in the middle ear can cause head noises. Abnor malities in the tiny ear bones can make trouble. Head noises are often produced by what is called otosclerosis, a degener tive disease of the ear which is probably inherited. With this, there is hardening of the bone around the middle ear. Head noises can follow injury to the ear by an explosion or other loud noise, but usually this is only temporary. The trouble can fol low when the person is constant ly exposed to noise, as in a ri veter or a man working around jet airplanes. May Follow Injury There are rare instances in which head noises follow an in jury to the skull, as after an auto accident. There are several drugs, such as quinine, aspirin, ana streptomycin, which can cause the ears to ring. It is possible that certain allergic re actions can cause car noises. It is probable that many ear noises and especially those of old persons with good ears, are pro duced in the brain. They may easily follow a little stroke. A few times in my life I have been alarmed at night when I heard a chirping sound in my ear. I have thought to myself. "Here we go for several years of annoyance," and then I discov ered that a little beetle had dropped into my ear. When I got it out I was all right again. One day years ago, when I wash ed a big plug of wax out of a man's ear, in it I found a good sized mummified insect. When I showed it to the fellow he was thrilled because he remembered when it had become stuck in the wax and had buzzed until it died. I cannot say what to do for ear noises because I cannot learn much about the subject from my friends, the expert ear men. Permanents . 595 up Haircuts $loo up Don't Forget.
