Exposure to the charms and enchantments of the Three Sis trrt country of the upper Mc Kenzie river is not recom mended to the vacationer who would remain faithful to more prosaic and better advertised summer pleasure spots. Hid pnsune splendor of tnis t -srr- j pnmiuve area some w mues east of Eugene on highway 126 can come dangerously close to malting an addict of you over night. The development of this re gion's tourist accommodations, unlike the fast boating area of the lower McKenzie, is only now getting under way. Lately, en thusiastic Californians, who in stinctively know how to please travelers, are investing in first iass cabins, motels, restau rants, recreation areas and even a beauty parlor, so sold are they on this region. PrteoU Baud Cuss Even the Dominican fathers tf San Rafael, Cal., have suc cumbed to the charms of the J Three Sisters and have invested I more than a quarter of a million I dollars in a summer camp for students studying for the priest (hood. In an Oregon State Motor as i (ociation motor log to the region, the writer and his family visited scores of fine cabins strung along the fast, sparkling Mc Kenzie. We stayed at Laughing Waters m a two-bedroom cabin, done m natural wood and sporting a huge stone fireplace in the living room. A furnished kitchen had dean, ample facilities for meals, which could be topped off with rainbow, cutthroat and Dolly Varden trout, caught easily by n v - 3 Lara flows dammed the I pper MoKmzle creating Clear lake. But if the fishing is fabulous, the hiking is nothing less than spectacular. There is the ex citement of discovering Sahalie and Koosah waterfalls, two of the finest in Oregon; the thrill of journeys to the Three Sisters and the lava beds beyond and a trek to cold Clear lake, or to warm, shallow Fish lake nearby. Clear lake was created when volcanic flows dammed the can yon and trapped a forest, more than 1000 years old. RowboaU may be rented for 50 cents an hour from the Santiam Fish and Game association, whioh also operates cabins and a restaurant and store. Volcanoes Active Dr. Howell Williams, Univer sity of California geologist who studied the Three Sisters region, believes there was more vol '.anic activity there during the past few thousand years since the time of Christ than in any other part of the high Cascades. Evidences of later gladers that gouged out the old volca noes can be seen along the Mc Kenzie highway. The North Sis ter, largest and oldest of the Three Sisters group, offers good hiking trails at its base and on its slopes gives a moderate test to the skilled mountaineer. Here, then, is a vacation land with an enchanting and seduc tive past, once a cinder box of Hades." now a Thoreau-like land of surprises, like heated swimming pools, an air strip for winged travelers, good roads, covered bridges, restaurants, first-class motels and cabins, beauty parlors and cpclctail lounges.
