By PATRICIA WIGGINS Washington (W Back stairs at the White House: Although Cape Cod's Oyster harbors has been ruled out in favor of Coaster's Harbor Island off Newport, R. I., for the Presi dent's vacation, Eisenhower still is likely to visit there "if and when" his work-play holiday begins. One reason is that the Presi dent's good friend Cliff Roberts, a New York investment broker, has rented a house at Oyster Harbors just a nice boat ride away from Newport and has invited the President up for a visit. A second reason is that exclu- Grange Notes Phoenix Grange Phoenix Grange met for the regular business meeting Tuesday,-July 9, at 8 p.m. HEC Chairman Carol Schroe der reported that $35 had been turned over to the Phoenix Com munity club, as Phoenix Grange donation to the Festival fund raising project, and was raised from the sale of lunches at the Community Festival. She also called attention to the Grange canning contest poster on the wall and an nounced the annual Grange pic nic Sunday, July 14, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles John son, 1297 Camp Baker rd. There is a new bridge being constructed on Camp Baker rd., and those attending should take the Coleman Creek rd. to Camp Baker rd., then turn left to the second house on the left. Master Dee Hendrickson an nounced the Grange Council meeting at Shady Cove Satur day, July 13, at 8 -p.m. Those attending should take sand wiches or cookies. He also thanked those who had helped clean up the grounds and burn the grass around the Grange hall Friday, June 28. Eleven members responded to his call for volunteers to do the work. The chaplain reported Mrs. Marian Riegel ill; Legislative Chairman Melvin Lattie report ed on the new agronomy site. Sol Cox of ways and means committee suggested a white ele phant sale at the first meeting in August. He and members of his committee will work out the details. Olin Poe reported that sales slips amounting to more than $8,000 had been turned in last quarter. That represents quite a sum of money being spent with grange bulletin advertisers. The sales slip project is steadily growing. Any member not hav ing been contacted consult your grange bulletin for details, and send your sales slips each quar ter to Olin Poe or Mrs. Sol Cox. July 1 is the beginning of a new quarter. Miss Evelyn Neidermeyer gave gave a report on 4-H sum mer school which she attended at the agriculture college in Cor vallis. And the display table of pictures taken during the sum mer school and a large assort ment of ribbnns she had won during her 4-H membership was also arranged by her. Her prin ciple project is sheep though she is taking cooking, knitting and other subjects. Edith Poe, chairman of HEC district 1 gave' a report of HEC activities at State Grange. Ex plained the sewing contest and the judging of sewing entries at State Grange. There are six counties in district 1. Grange adjourned at 9:30. Ice cream, cookies and Coffee were served by the refreshment com mittee, Mr. and Mrs. George Drake, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Mr. and Mrs. Alford Lacey, Shutt Gertrude Lewin, Publicity Chairman. GOLD HILL GRANGE The Gold Hill range met July 4: Master Hal Bishop conducted the meeting. The attendance was fair con sidering, it was the 4th of July holiday. The minutes were read and approved. The business was postponed until the next meet ing. The painting of the dining room is now in progress. The Grange closed early and a lunch was served in the din ing room. The nex serving committee will be Leona Jinks and Mr. and Mrs. Bush. sive Oyster Harbors boasts what has been described as the best golf course in New England. The White House has made no secret of the fact that golf was one of the over-riding considera tions in the President's vacation spot selection. The Newport golf course and the Navy base com munication facilities at Coaster's Harbor were deciding factors In selecting the Rhode Island site. The selection of the Newport site caused a blossoming of maps and literature in the White House press room. Newsmen, who will be quartered in a New port hotel, were intrigued par ticularly by a .section in Cleve land Armory's "Last Resorts," a volume about the heyday days of Newport and other social watering spots. ; Amory describes one Newport dinner given by society matron Mrs. O. H. P. Belmont. White sand was sprinkled down the center of the table and each guest was given a miniature bucket and shovel. At a given signal, all dug into the center piece, and found thousands of dollars worth of rubies, dia monds and other precious gems ' Mrs. Eisenhower is said to have had quite a bit to do with the President choosing a sea and sand vacation this year. According to some sources, she put her foot down firmly on mountain spots or other sites where "roughing it" would be in order. Trout fishing in moun tain streams is another presi dential favorite.
