The airplane reported a landing gear indicator light failure but landed all right, fire men stated. Accidtnt Cars operated by Phyllis Lorann Fifer, 21. of Chico, Calif., and Elbert Horace Kincheloe, 74, of Route 1, Box 265. Talent, were involved in an accident on Highway 99 near the north Talent junction yes terday, according to state police. Kincheloe was cited for failure to signal, police said. m m m Gat Explodes Firemen were summoned to the Jackson coun ty jail about 5:15 p.m. yesterday I when a gas explosion occurred ! in the oven of the kitchen range. They reported no damage. A cigarette discarded from an auto was presumed to be the cause of a one-half acre grass fire early yesterday afternoon along Table Rock rd., south of Schultz rd. . . Gas Stolen E. W. Spencer, Bear Creek orchards, reported to sheriff's deputies Tuesday that an orchard barn had been brok en into Monday evening and 12 to 18 gallons of gasoline were syphoned from a tractor in the barn. The sheriff's report show ed that a hack saw had been used to cut through a hasp on the barn door Thursday Meeting Rogue Soil Conservation district will meet Thursday, July 11, at 8 p.m. in the county agricultural extension service office in the courthouse. The new Bear Creek water shed project will be dis cussed and amendments and other steps to further the pro motion of the bill will be for mulated by the group. Obituaries ATLANTUS W. KALLAND Atlantus W. Kalland, 77, of 2246 Fowler lane, Medford, died this morning at his home. Conger-Morris Funeral home is in charge of arrangements. MRS. AASTA TURNQUIST Mrs. Aasta Turnquist, wife of Edward A. Turno.uist, died at the family residence, 411 Mel rose ave., Medfoid, this morn ing. Perl Funeral home is in charge of arrangements. FRANK L. SUTHERLAND Funeral services for Frank L. Sutherland of Camp White, who died in the VA Domiciliary Sunday, will be held in the Camp White chapel Friday at 9 a.m. Chaplain Samuel Feller will officiate. Committal will be in the Camp White cemetery. Conger-Morris Funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Sutherland was born Dec. 1, 1875, in Guthrie county, Iowa. He was a veteran of the Spanish American war serving from April 29, 1898, through Nov. 5, 1898. Survivors include two sons, Darrell K. Sutherland, Van Nuys, Calif.: and Neil Suther land, Honolulu, Hawaii. MRS. ADA PEERY Ashland Mrs. Ada May Peery, 86. 280 First st., Ashland, died Tuesday evening at her home. She was born Nov. 22, 1870, in Illinois and lived in Ashland for the past 32 years. Her hus band died in 1918. Survivors include two daugh ters, Mrs. Peery Polk, Ashland; and Mrs. Hattie Lamb, Klamath Falls; seven sons, Allen. Peery. Anderson, Calif.; Elmer Peery, Klamath Falls; Alfred Peery, Quincy, Wash.; Roy Peery, Ump- qua, Ore.; Floyd Peery, Ander son, Calif.; Ray Peery, Medford; and Ralph Peery, Umpqua; and three sisters, Mrs. Mittie Peery, of Roseburg; Mrs. Myrtle Leigh- ton. Myrtle Creek; and Mrs. Dora Leighton. Welch, Okla. Four other children preceded her in death. Other survivors in clude 26 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday. July 12, at Litwiller's Mountain View chapel. Ashland. Committal will he at Mountain View cemetery. Lookout Park Will Honor Conservationist Eugene A 10-acre park and recreation area named in honor of Ivan Oaks will be dedi cated Sunday on the shores of Lookout Point reservoir south of here. The park will honor Oaks for his years-long efforts in behalf of conservation. He was for many years executive secretary of the Willamette River Basin Project committee. This high reflected Standard fc Poor's index of 500 stocks. The Dow-Jones industrials was around its record high achieved April 6, 1956. Gains in the rails average wise outperformed any market sice Feb. 13. They set a new high since Jan. 17 and came within about five points of the year's best level. Steels moved up under the lead of U.S. Steel. Chemicals had wide gains. General Motors set a new high in a firm motor group. Oils added fractions to more than a point. Government Goal In Operation Alert Salem on The first phase of Oregon's participation in the na tionwide "Operation Alert 1957" got under way this week with continuity of government as the goal of the civil defense exer cise. Col. Arthur Sheets, state CD director, said the first phase of the exercise was a hypothetical period of world tension when nuclear attack was imminent. Second phase will be a simu lated attack sometime July 12 by nuclear bombs and missiles on more than 100 United States cities. Portland and Salem are both critical target areas. Relocation Surveys State agencies in both cities were engaged in relocation sur veys this week. The State Wel fare Commission plans to use Linfield college at McMinnville for the test while the State Un employment Compensation Com mission will set up its manpower pool at Toledo. State Board of Health person nel . will locate an emergency medical service at Pacific uni versity at Forest Grove. Token evacuations from Port land will be arranged by the De partment of Interior, Depart ment of Agriculture, regional post office agency, the FBI and others.
