This was one of 18 events in the first annual Oregon State water ski championships, held last Sunday on Gardener lake, 15 miles east of Medford. The meet was sponsored by Crater Lions and had the sanction of the American Water Ski association. The lake is man-made, owned by the Victor Gardener family, and is situated on their property at the end of Yankee creek road. Bob DeYoung, skier from Gresham, takes off from the Gardener late dock. Standing on the dock Ts Ion Skin per, outstanding, Medford participant. DeYoung was second among novices in the men's slalom event. Skinner aptured the slalom crown and was runner-up for all around honors. The Bill Barlow boat, "Income Taxi II," powered by a 250 horsepower Cadillac inboard engjne, tows the skier. nil :k: A group of spectators, part of the estimated 1,000 persons attending Sunday, watch from blankets spread along the shore. The weather was fine at a not-too-hot 81 degrees, and shorts and sun glasses were popular. Many folks made a family affair of it, and brought along picnic lunch, lemonade, kids and even the dog. Events started at 8:30 in the morningjand lasted till after 5 that afternoon. He is unidentified, but typical. Sun-tanned Randy Paragary from Sacramento bites into a hot dog after winning first in the junior boys' jump division with a leap of 42 feet. " -l' ry f " ; .Vt- -i This is the Eames family from Antioch, Calif., all three members of which took first place In their class for water ski slalom. The father, Al, 1955 coast champ, took, the veterans' title; ' Nina Eames won the women's slalom, and their son, Gary, led the field in junior boys' event. Gary also came out winner in the over all standings. The slaloms were run over a two-gate, six-buoy course at speeds of 24-26 and 28-30 miles per hour. ; u n- iii ' ' . - -'TT T" , VT'. Wall, did much of the piloting for skiers in Sunday events, using the Barlow boat. Ybung Barlow lived up to his billing, taking the men's tricks division. He had won first in. tricks at the 1957 Sodabay meet. Clear Lake, Calif., and in the 1956 Golden State championships. Wall was first in jumping at Sodabay in 1955.
