The four-story high missile, powered by solid pro pellants, has proven extremely reliable over a large num ber of flights. The Defense Department revealed that the X-17 has reached the highest speed ever achieved by an instrumented vehicle. These missiles are probing the heat barrier which would be encountered by long-range missiles re-entering the earth's atmosphere from space. Funeral Saturday For Young Actress Killed in Collision Laramie. Wyo. IW The body of acress Judy Tyler, whose brilliant Broadway career end ed tragically in an automobile accident Wednesday, will be re turned to her parents in Ridge- field. Conn., Saturday for burial. Singer Elvis Presley, who had Just completed the lead role op posite the 24-year-old brown eyed actress in a new movie, was heart broken when he learn ed of her death Thursday. "All of us boys really loved that girl," Presley said at his home in Memphis, Tenn. "She meant a lot to all of us. I don't believe I can stand to see that movie we made together now, just don't believe I can. Husband Also Killed Miss Tyler and hrr husband of only four months, Gregory Lafayette, were killed at 5:50 p.m., on Wednesday when their automobile collided with anoth er just north of Rock River, Wyo., on U.S. 30. They were re turning to their New York home for a vacation as Miss Tyler had just completed the movie, "Jail house Rock," with Presley in Hollywood. Miss Tyler, a biack-haired beauty, was killed instantly in the grinding head-on collision. Her body was torn in hall. Laf ayette. 24, a television actor from Hopewell Junction, N. Y., died early on Thursday in a Lar amie hospital of a broken back and internal Injuries. Phoenix 4-H Prefair Scheduled Saturday The Phoenix 4-H community prefair will start at 10 a.m. Sat urday at the community hall. Beef showing will be from 10 to 11 a.m.: dairy showing 11 a.m. to noon; sheep showing. 1 to 2 p m.; and swine, 2 to 3 p.m. Home economics projects will also be exhibited at the prefair. Jack Dube, Phoenix vocational agriculture instructor, will be judge for the event Lunch will be available on the 'community club grounds. . Showdown Battle imminent in Cuba Santiago De Cuba HP Re ports here today indicated a showdown battle may be immi nent between government troops and rebel forces in the Sierra Mae tra Vounoainz. Other reports told of the sudden "disappearance" of "num erous" Cubans and there was speculation they had joined the rebels headed by Fidel Castro. Authorities in the rebel-ridden mountains in southeast Cuba were said to have already taken special measures in anticipation of a major clash. 462 Major Business Mergers in Six Months Washington '1? Some 462 major business mergers were reported in the first six months of this year, four less than in the same period last year. Russia Challenged To Promote Stability Washington (IP) The United States today challenged Russia to follow its Kremlin shakeup with "practical measures ... to promote peace and stability" in the world. The State Department, com menting on the recent Kremlin upheaval, listed disarmament, re unification of Germany, and the Middle East as areas in which the Soviet Union could take "practical measures" for easing East-West tensions. Officially, the department adopted a wait and see attitude on how the ouster of oldline Stalinists from the Communist party hierarchy will have an im pact, if any, on foreign policy. "What this will add up to re mains to be seen," Department Press Officer Lincoln White told a news conference. "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." Woodworkers Slated To Strike in Canada Vancouver, B.C. (IP) An estimated 34,000 wood workers were scheduled to go on strike today following a breakdown of negotiations between union and company officials. Last minute talks called by British Columbia Premier W. A. C. Bennett in an effort to avert the strike failed. The walkout was approved by 90 per cent of the woodworkers in an earlier vote. The lumber mill operators, who said they could ont afford a 20 per cent wage increase as demanded by the International Woodworkers of America, made a final offer of five per cent retroactive to June 15. The average wage in the in dustry last year was $2 per hour. Passenger Travel on West Coast Increases Nearly 15 per cent more pas sengers boarded West Coast Air lines planes during the first six months of 1957 than for the same period last year, company officials have announced. The company serves Medford. Seventeen of the past 18 months have set new passenger records for any corresponding months in the company's 10V2 year history. A new all-time mark in passengers carried for any month was set in June at 23,925, breaking the previous single month's record of 22,410 in August, 1956. This amounted to a system-wide average of nearly 800 per day. I Mother of Kidnaped Infant Said Expecting Westbury, N.Y. (W Mrs. Beatrice Weinberger, whose in fant son, Peter, was kidnaped and- left to die on a roadside one year ago, is expecting another child. Mrs. Weinberger and her hus band, Morris, have one other child Lewis, 3. Angelo LaMarca, confessed kidnaper of one-month old Peter, is scheduled to die in the elec tric chair at Sing Sing prison the week of Aug. 19.
