Records of Oregon Veteran Loans Broken Salem (IPI All records under .' the Oregon veterans' larm and home loan program were broken in June when the Department of Veterans' Affairs loaned $4,768, 550 to 496 ex-servicemen of World War II and Korea. Because of the unexpected heavy demand for state loans since April 10, when the new higher maximum loan amounts became law, lending under the program may be sharply cur tailed, within the next few months, according to H C. Saal feld. director of veterans affairs. The reason for the impending shortage of loan funds, Saalfeld explained, is that the state con stitution limits the amount of bonds that may be outstanding for the purpose of obtaining loan funds, to four per cent of the state's assessed valuation. In other words, the department can only issue bonds up to 81 million dollars, ajid this limit will be reached July 29 when 15 million dollars of bonds go on the market. Crompton disguised himself with a false moustache and fol lowed the girl home, but she slammed the door in his face. He posed as a crippled, blind beggar outside the bank, sere naded her with Neapolitan love songs and offered Miss Water house the coins he collected from sympathetic passersby. His would-be lady fair refus ed to listen to his songs and turned up her nose at the coins. Five days ago ' Crompton walked into the bank wearing his while tennis shorts, nodded politely to the staff and then began turning handsprings in the middle of the lobby. The doctors said that Mrs. At kins' breathing had stopped and there was no heart beat when she got into the delivery room. THE TUNA Check Cattle Feed Supply, Agent Says Hungry heifers on hill pastures are apt to grow into poor pro ducers, according to Earle Jossy, county agriculture agent. Skimping on feed for the fu ture herd can result in lower pro duction for the entire life of the cows, he pointed out. July is a good month to round up replace ment heifers and look them over for condition. If they are thin and appear unthrifty, see that they get more feed, Jossy ad vised. Heifers will do well on good pasture, but if the pasture be comes short they should be pro vided with about two pounds per day of grain. This would be satisfactory up to three months of freshening. During the last three months before freshening, the heifers should receive a feeding of three or four pounds of grain daily. Growing heifers have a great need for minerals. A mixture of ground limestone, steamed bone meal and salt in equal parts should be available at al times. "It goes without saying that plenty of clean water is a neces sity for growing heifers. A little time and expense used in rais ing healthy heifers will be re turned many times over when these come into production," Jossy added. THEY MEET Canton, Conn.
