SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday, July 8, 1957 Dr. L. G. Gentner Leads Entomology Meet in Portland Dr. Louis G. Gentner, entomol ogist at the Southern Oregon ex periment sation, presided at the 41st annual meeting of the Pac ific branch of the Entomological Societv of America In Portland June 26-23. Dr. Gentner served as chair man of the Pacific branch dur ing the past year. He vas ac companied by Mrs. Gentner. who served on the committee on en tertainment for the women. Pacific Branch The Pacific branch has a mem bership of 1,150 including ento mologists and representatives of the agricultural chemicals in dustry from the nine western states, the Haw aiian Islands, Alaska, British Columbia and western Mexico. During the sessions the latest developments in many phases of entomological research were presented. Of particular interest was a report on work dona to determine what makes insects and mites resistant to spray materials. A panel discussion covered the latest information on spider mites affecting fruit trees, in cluding species involved, con trol measures and resistance to miticides. Dr. Gentner served on this panel and discussed the spider mites situation for the state of Oregon. Another panel covered the matter of training entomologists and attracting prospective stu dents to enter the field of entom ology. Besults of work with the newer chemicals were reported and studies of the habits of in sects as they affect control also were included. Several papers ! dealt with the spotted alfalfa aphid, a recently introduced pest, which has spread rap idly through many states.
