Beavers Split Pair With Vancouver Club NEIL PLUMLEY ACCEPTS BID TO PLAY IN ALL-STAR GAME after making the Mail Tribune's Neil Plumley, Medford High school's all-state football tackle in 1956, has announced he has accepted an invitation to play in the Wigwam Wiseman of America's prep all-star football game on August 30 at Memphis, Tenn. He plans also to participate in the Oregon Shrine all-star game the week end before in Port land. Plumley was named to the Wigwam Wisemen's All-Ameri- can second team last December All-Southern Oregon conference and the Oregonian's and Oregon Journal's all-state clubs. The big athlete, who plans to attend Oregon State college next fall, has been working for Hawkinson Tire Tread service this summer. He played basket ball at Medford high and this spring in track won the state shot put championship. Plumley had official puts of better than 60 feet. Sport Mfcv OSCAR FRALEY I n J V5t2T J Sporri Writer Parade Pgg Mp New York ro? Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick said today that the method of select ing the All-Star teams would be discussed at the major league winter meetings as result of the Cincinnati ballot box stuffing and it seems obvious that there are at least two better systems. The fan pays the baseball freight and it would be ideal if he could fairly select the All- Star team. But the way they did it in Cincinnati made old Tammany Hall look like a bunch of amateurs and proved that as of the moment it's a com plete farce. Frick admits that something will have to be done to "tighten it up" and there are two good ways to come up with better teams. Let Big Leaguers Do It The first would be to let the managers choose the All-Star teams but without selecting any of their own team members. Another method which would be fair and equitable would be to allow each major leaguer to pick an AH-Star team again without being allowed to name anyone from his own team. At any rate, the Cincinnati landslide proved that the cur rent system is ludicrous. Dis proportionate voting would have placed Redlegs in seven of the eight fielding positions. There were 500,000 votes from Cincinnati alone in the last week. Of these, 481,882 were for Don Hoak and you must remember that last year's top choice, Dale Long of the Pirates, won with only 179,744 votes. So Frick stepped in and knock ed off three of the Redlegs, putting Stan Musial, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron in the lineup You can't argue with the fact fhat they belong in the lineup. SERIES TO BE TELECAST New York IB At least the first two games of. the 1957 World Series will be telecast in color. Commissioner Ford Frick and the National Broadcasting Co. announced today. The sixth and seventh games will also be colorcast, if they are played, and there is a chance the third, fourth and fifth games to be played in the National League city may be. -- But, if you were a Cincinnati voter, you could argue over whether Frick has a right to do what he did. Ballots are ballots and every other city had the same privilege of unlimited voting. Points Up Fare Yet it points up the farcial nature of the fan balloting. Any newspaper or radio station can conduct balloting by applying to the commissioner. Some count the votes religiously. It's no secret that others, buried under an avalanche of ballots, take a sample, weigh the rest and multiply the sample by the poundage involved. Warren Giles, the National League president, has suggested that each city be given an equal number of official ballots. This would shut out some of the vot ers and doesn't seem fair, either. So the thought here is to put it in the hands, of those who really have the inside info on who the real All-Stars are, any how the managers or the players. Eisenhower Back Al White House Washington OP) President Eisenhower returned here Mon day night from a four-day week end at his Gettysburg, Pa., farm to celebrate his 41st wedding an niversary. The President plans to remain at the White House throughout the week despite the Fourth of July holiday. He will return to Gettysburg next week end. Mrs. Eisenhower remained at the farm when the Chief Execu tive returned to the White House Monday night. Presidential Press Secretary James C. Hagerty said Eisen hower has a new experience ahead of him testing out the new White House helicopters. Hagerty said sometime between July 12 and 19 Eisenhower will take off from the south lawn of the White House and fly to a se cret relocation center as part of the civil defense exercise "Oper ation Alert 1957." By UNITED PRESS It was Dominion Day Monday in Canada and Vancouver's Mounties planned to celebrate it by winning a pair of Pacific Coast league games from Port land and thus sneak within a game of the idle San Francisco Seals, who lead the league. But Portland spoiled the holi day for the hosts and kept them two full games out of first place by splitting a pair with the Can adians at Capilano Stadium. The Beavers grabbed the op ener, 7-6, then bowed to the Mounties in the nightcap, 3-2. Bad Day It was a bad day all around for the 7,404 fans who turned out in a holiday mood and un doubtedly went home a bit gloomy. The first game was delayed for 90 minutes to allow the field to dry from morning rains. Then in an abbreviated seven innings, the Beavers won the hitfest. Portland moved to a com manding 7-3 lead, sparked by a two-run single by Ed Wincemak in the third, but the lead almost vanished in the seventh when the Mounties scored three times Bob Thorpe, third Beave- pitcher, came on in the final frame to save the win for Ray Bauer, who now has a 3-2 rec ord for the season. Don Ferrar ese absorbed the loss, squaring his record at 3-3. In the seven-inning second game, third baseman Cal Segrist salvaged a split for Vancouver with a pair of home runs. He put the hosts ahead by 1-0 in the first with a circuit clout, then broke a 2-2 deadlock in the sixth with another bases-empty blast. Erautt Wins Eddie Eraut went the route for third win against five losses. The loser was Dick Marlowe, 1-3, who went the route and gave up only four hits. ' '-;f.w , -X f p,, - -- .
