1 o rOTTBTTCW MTOFOSO fOMOON) MAIL THIBTJKE Sunday. Juna SB. 1(37 Deputy Sheriff Held Prisoner by Ex-Convict During 9-Hour Chase Martinez, Ca!:f. "P A dep uty sheriff, held prisoner by an ex-convict dura.g a wild, nine hour chase throuzh the north central part of California, Sat urday, slugged and then shot his drug-crazed ex-convict cap tor The drama'.ic c'unax to a grim game of cat-and-mouse, which saw 23 police cars trailing the ex convict and hii deputy sheriff captive, came to an end here shortly after 9 am. p d.t.) It had started shortly before mid night at Madera, Calif., nearly 200 miles south of here. Critical Condition Taken to Contra Costa County General hospital here in critical condition was James Franklin Goldman, the 33-year-old ex-convict who effected his escape from Deputy Sheriff Harry Haring in Madera late Friday night. The escape came when Gold man pulled a concealed gun on Haring who had arrested Gold man fur questioning in connec tion with a Fresno, Calif., drug store robbery and a subsequent escape from sheriff's deputies earlier in the week. - Yesterday morning's wild ride began when Goldman comman deered the deputy's car and took him as hostage. Then followed a cautious "track the cat" game, with both sheriff i and highway patrol radio cars trailing Goldman as he drrive a zig-zag course fro-n Madera to Martinez. Radio To Pursuers But with Goldman at the wheel oi the car most of the time, Haring radioed repeatedly to pursuers: -Call off the pursuit. Gold man's getting an itchy trigger fingsr." And shortly before the end of the chase, after Goldman had ordered Haring into the driver's seat the deputy dropped a note which read cryptically: "Get off my tail. My life is in danger." But the pursuing line of cars, which had grown to 23, held doggedly to the convict and his captive, although they allowed them to make a stop for gas in nearby Pittsburg, Calif., 15 min utes before Haring ended the chase by wresting the gun from Goldman and shooting him in the stpmach. As the weird caravan wound its way around the back streets of Martinez, seat of Contra Costa county and located 25 miles northeast of San Francisco, Har ing told Goldman: Turns Away 'Take a look and see what street we are on and then tell me where you want to turn." "Then, when he turned away to look, I clobbered him with a right to the jaw and grabbed his gun and fired at his stom ach." Hariig said that Goldman "wolfed down" pep pills all night. "He gave me a couple but I just mouthed them and later got rid of them," Haring said. The deputy said they refueled twice, once at Dos Palos and again at Pittsburgh. "He sent me into a drivein once to get some drinks and when the malt and sandwiches were ready I told the waitress 'Don t look up, there's a guy out there who has got me cor nered'." Asked if he had warned off the trailing officers, Haring an swered: "I sure was waving them back. He, Goldman, warned me what would happen if they didn't fall back. He was unemotional, cold and got excited only at the very last." Haring said he originally ar rested Goldman late Friday iiiqht for questioning regarding the Fresno robbery. "I became suspicious when I spoiled him near North Fork in , tne Sierra foothills east of Ma : dera." he said. "He was walking ! along with no shoes, no shirt and i was heavily tattooed on both arms." He said that during the wild ride Goldman talked about his i life in prison and his younger ! days in Butte, Mont.
