As executive secretary of the Lutheran World Federation, Lund-Quist has traveled thou sands of miles in the past few years to visit Lutheran church es on both sides of the Iron Curtain in Europe, and in many countries of Asia and Africa. He is now in the United States to prepare for the assembly of the Lutheran World Federation which will be held in Minneap olis, Minn., Aug. 15-25. Delega tions from 27 countries, repre senting most of the world's 70 million Lutherans, will attend the Minneapolis meeting. History Contradicted Lund-Quist said in an inter view that European Christians are "intensely curious" about the appearent religious revival in America. It seems to contra dict the lessons of history, as well as the current experience of European churches, for U.S. church membership to reach record-breaking peaks in a time of great material prosperity. In the nations of Western Eu rope, he said, where living standards also are high and where churches enjoy the same freedom and privileges as American churches, there is "nothing remotely comparable" to this country's upsurge of re ligious interest. "Attendance at most of the Western European churches is very low. The mass attitude to ward religion seems to be gen erally one of indifference." But even America's concern with religion pales by compari son with the "fervent attach ment" of Eastern European Christians to their persecuted churches. "The greatest story in Protes tantism today is the courageous resistance which East Germa ny's 16 million Lutherans are putting up againlst a tremen dous effort by the Communist government to get them to de sert the church." Lund-Quist said East German children are under "terrible pressure" from the government to take the so-called "civil con firmation oath," shearing loyal ty to Communist principles and to Soviet Russia, as a substitute for the traditional rite of church confirmation. Teen-agers Pressured. A teen-ager who refuses to take the Communist oath is warned that he can go no fur ther in school, that he will have no chance to get a good job, and that his parents may be ousted from their homes and jobs. Lund-Quist said the East Ger man Lutheran church, under the leadership of Bishop Otto Dibelius of Berlin, has rejected YOUTH ACTIVITIES Services for Youth Caravan ers will be held Wednesday at 8 p.m. at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran church. Thursday a pic nic will be held for the congre gation and the youth group at 5 p.m. Friday a youth meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. and Satur day at 7:30 p.m. voters will meet with the Youth Caravaners. any compromise with the Red regime and has told its mem bers that "they must choose be tween civil confirmation and church confirmation." Despite the government's threats, only four per cent of the East German children who reached confirmation age last FILM SCHEDULED Teens for Christ, Seventh-day Adventist church, will meet to night at 8 p.m. in the school park. Saturday the Adventist churches will hear "The New Jerusalem Limited" at 6:45 p.m. and a film, "Daybreak in Africa, will be shown at 8:30 p.m. in the school chapel. year chose Communism over the church. The East German government has not yet disclosed whether it will permit Bishop Dibelius and other East German Lutheran eaders to attend the Minneapo lis meeting. Lund-Quist will go to Berlin soon to discuss the matter. TWO SPEAKERS SUNDAY Ashland Louis Miles will preach at the 8:30 a.m. worship service at Ashland MethodSrft church Sunday with the Rev.
