Phone SP 3-4564 By E. V. Durling Featuras Syndicjfs, Inc.) Many a wager has been lost on that question. Anyway, the scenes of my childhood are not as dear to this heart as they might be. I never visit them. Haven't even visited my birth place though I pass within a half a block of it every time I motor out to Belmont Park How ever, I am due shortly to have a view of a village where some of the happiest days of my child hood were spent. That is Walker Valley, N.Y., where my family spent many summers. I plan to pass through that lively little hamlet on my way to the Ellei ville Music Fesetival to attend a Stokowski contest. The last time I went to Ellenville was when I was 14 years old. At that time I was bound for the County Fair. Widows Three out of four wives can expect to be widows. That, of course, is due to the higher life expectancy of the female. It was that highly cynical fellow, Thomas Fuller, who said, "Sor row for a husband is like a pain in the elbow, sharp and short." An unjust remark. The average widow of marriageable age in this country usually waits about three and a half years before marrying again. The space be tween marriage of divorcees is about two and one half years. Passing By J. Fred Coots. Veteran tune smith. Comesfrom our old neigh borhood in Southern Brooklyn. Continues to collect much money from his old songs. Every Christ mas the royalty checks roll in from his immortal Yuletide ditty "Saiita Claus Is Coming To Town." Now he is getting a mul titude of royalty payments from the song titled '"Love Letters In The Sand" which he and Nick Kenny wrote about 25 years ago. Asking Queries from clients. Q. Is that great thoroughbred Gallant Man r i g htly called "an Irish horse?" A. Yes, sir. The noble animal you mention was born in the County Kildare. Ireland, and so were his sire and dam. . . Q. Seven failures before success is about the aver age. Or such is the Biblical claim. Proverbs XV:16 says: "For a just man failleth seven times and riseth again." That brilliant and highly whimsical comedian, Tom Ewell, did better than that. He is a survivor of 27 flop plays. Twelve in a row. But he kept on tryiiig. He finally scored a hit in the play titled "J o h n Loves Mary," a bigger hit in "The Seven Year Itch" and a still bigger one in his current play "The Tunnel of Love." Among The Married The most perfect of beautiful females are born to devitalized mothers with outdoor vigorous fathers. These children are us ually blondes. When a man's vitality is lower and the woman's higher it usually results in the birth of a boy. That is what Dr. Charles C. Hayes of Santa Maria Calif, says his extensive research indicates. So if your wife is de vitalized you many expect your child to be a beautiful blonde female. If you want a boy your wife will have to have you devitalized. Doc Holiday (Douglas), mowing down a gang of cowboy rustlers head ed by the Clanton and McLow ery brothers. In the movie the Earps notify the cowboys they will shoot it out tot avenge the death of Wyatt's brother, Morgan. After the bloody victory Lancaster rides off into the sunset to woo Ronda Fleming in California. But the real life story, as told in western history books, is even more dramatic. Earpt Surprise Cowboyt Actually the Earps surprised the cowboys in the corral as they were preparing to leave town. The Earps were gunning for the gang, not because of a murder, but because each side accused the other of master minding a Wells Fargo stage coach holdup. The town of Tombstone a divided ' and historians still are over whether the Earps murdered the cowboys before they had a chance to throw up their hands, or whether the Earps fired only after the cow boys reached for their guns. The Earps were supposed to be ar resting the cowboys on a charge of illigally carrying arms. His torians say only two were arm- i ed. and legally, as tlrey were riding out of town. But Sheriff John Behan char ged Wyatt Earp and Doc Holi day with murder. Conflicting Testimony ! Six witnesses testified at the trial that they saw the cowboys throw up their hands as ordered by the Earps, indicating Earp was not the true blue hero that Lancaster (and Hugh O'Brian on TV) makes him out to be. Three witnesses testified Earp only was doing his duty and shot to save his life. Nobody could agree as to who fired the first shot.
