MEDFORD LEGION CLUB, ROSEBURG MIX TONIGHT Coach John Kovenz has pro nounced the Medford American Legion junior baseball club "pretty confident" and "really eager" for their game tonight with the strong Roseburg aggre gation. The two clubs clash at 8 p.m. at the fairgrounds diamond here. It will be the first home game of the season for the Medford ites who are hopeful that fan support will match that shown at Roseburg where success of the Umpqua valley crew in 1956 has made the Legion brand of ball tops in popularity this year. Roseburg Jast year fielded the third-ranking Legion club in the nation. Whether this season's crew is up to last year's in cali ber has yet to be shown. But the Douglas county gang has a number of players back from last year's squad and with that background of experience ranks at least as one of the teams to beat in the state. Kovenz said that Wayne Allen, the club's heavy slugger, likely will draw the pitching assignment with his Crater high battery mate, Randy Campbell probably working behind the plate. Other possible local start ers are all from Medford high, George Ice, first base; Ray Ko nopasek, second base; Jerry Fields, third base; Dick Mon roe, shortstop; Bob Pond, left field; Ron Peery, center field, and Frank Peterson or Dale Shaw, right field. It will be the first game un der lights for members of the Medford club and, since the Roseburg squad has consider able experience under arcs, that could be a big advantage in its favor. Coach Bill Harper of Rose burg is expected to name his pitcher from among Bill Eswine, John Livingston and Allen Smith. Roseburg, with a 6-1 record at last report, has had some hefty hitting this year with Eswine, Moose Kennaday, Liv- Btf here a.t ARSONS MOTORS f- A I n r. Ems, Beers Win in NWL By UNITED PRESS A three-run splurge in the last half of the ninth gave Eugene a 6-5 decision over Wenatchee in Northwest league play Thurs day. It left the Emeralds still atop the heap by a half game as Yak ima stayed on the pace after a 6-5 nod over Tri-City. In the re maining game, Salem piled up 12 runs before Lewiston could put across one for a lopsided 16-6 win. Eugene blew the lid off a promising 5-3 Wenatchee lead in the ninth after centerfielder Roy Parker dropped Zeke King's long fly. It was the Chiefs' only error, but it put King on second. Bob Gauthier drew a walk and Gerald Jacobs beat out a bunt to load the bases. That was all for Wenatchee starter Jerry Johnston. John Keller boomed a long sacrifice fly to left off reliever Ernie Sad ler to score King. Mel Krause sacrificed to send in Gauthier, while Pete Mikacich singled in Jacobs with the winning tally. ingston, Larry Bissonette, Ron Beamer and Dick Meredith pac ing the club. He hit a double in the ninth inning that drove in the two winning runs and broke a 6-6 tie that had existed since the eighth when he came on and tossed a three-run gopher ball to Jim Baxes.
