Morse and Neuberger Denounce Charges by Republican Chairman ashington T? Oregon's two Democratic senators today branded as "v;cious" and "un founded" charges by GOP Na tional Chairman Meade Alcorn that six liberal Democrats sold out civil rights for a high dam at Hells Canyon. Sens. Richard L. Ncuberaer and Wayne L. Morse accused Al corn of tryin? to kill chances of the Hells Canyon bill in tiie House because the "'Eisenhower administration doesn't like it." Nubrger Not Accused They made the statements in answer to charEe- by Alcorn that six "self-styled liberal Demo crats" voted in the Senate last week to tend the civil rights bill to the Judiciary Committee in exchange for southern help on passage of the high federal dam nroject in Hells Canyon. Neuberger, a strong supporter 0 of the Hells Canyon dam, was not one of the six accused by Al corn. But he denounced Alcorn's charges as "shabby and unfound ed" Neuberger noted that he and Sens. Henry M. Jackson D-Wash.) and Frank Church (D Ida.), all advocates of the feder al dam, voted to bypass the Ju diciary Committee and put the civil rights bill on the Senate calendar. This move, opposed by south ern senators, increased chances for action on the House-approved measure. Attack Called 'Vicious' Morr;e said Alcorn's attack was "vicious and unwarranted false hood." He said the debate over the civil rights bill' completely disproves the vote-trading charge." "Alcorn and his reactionary senatorial private utility mouth pieces are trying to -divert atten tion from the Eisenhower admin istration's political immorality, demonstrated by its many be trayals of the public's right to have their heritage in natural re sources protected," Morse said. NATO Comments Criticized He also criticized Norstad's comments before the North Atlantic- Alliance in Paris where the American general is the Al lied supreme commander in Europe. Gromyko quoted Nur;tad's warnings that the United Stat es could attack the Soviet Un ion from anywhere in the world and destroy all targets of mili tary value in Russia and then said: "The American general clear Iv foreets that planes can fly in I either direction, not only from the direction of the aggressors. Nickerson be trayed his country by spilling missile secrets and the defend-a-t promptly pleaded guilty to 15 other counts of failing to safe guard classified matter. The two swift developments came in the first 90 minutes of Nickerson's heralded court mar tial. The defense accomplished its main goal, to have the 41-year-old career rocketeer cleared of espionage and perjury charges, when the Army withdrew its second charge containing three counts. Then it came time for Nicker son to plead to the one remain ing charge. One of his civilian lawyers. Robert K. Bell, Hunts ville, announced crisply in the tiny Army courtroom: "In view of the fact that the prosecut ion has withdrawn charge No. 2 the defendant wish es to plead guilty to Charge No. 1, on specifications one through 15." Court was recessed at that point. The second charge could have carried up to 16 years in prison, and S 10.000 fine or both. The first charge involved up to 30 years and heavy fines on all counts but Nickerson's guilty plea was expected to be a factor in the sentence. Yuma Hottest Place; Montana Said Coldest New York ilf The nation's highest temperature Monday was 120 degrees at Yuma, Ariz The low today was 33 at Drum mond, Mont., the weather Bu reau reported. In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS Interesting statistic: In 1956, according to the bu reau of public roads of the de partment of commerce, registra tion of U.S. motor vehicles reached a record high of 65,212, 510. This represented an in crease of 2,518,691 vehicles over 1955. Passenger cars alone number ed 54,332.295. There were 10. 625,536 trucks and 254,679 busses. rpHAT is to say: -- By putting a shade better than three persons in each pas senger car. we could move our WHOLE POPULATION from where it is now to somewhere else. We could do it in a mini mum of time, for modern cars move rapidly, and with a maxi mum of comfort, for even a load of four persons per modern automobile involves little crowd ing. By utilizing the trunks of the cars and adding the trucks and the busses, we could take most of our baggage along with us. rpHAT would be a record of A sorts, for no nation in the world was ever able to accom plish such a hegira before. We're getting places. 4 LL this, of course, raises questions. For example: If we undertook a mass move ment of ALL of our people, it would have to be assumed that we would be moving them from the United States of America to somewhere else. Like all happy and reasonably contented people, we grouse and grumble more or less constantly about the conditions under which we are compelled to live. But Getting down to bedrock WE'D ALL OF US EVERY MOTHER'S SON OF US RATHER LIVE IN THE UNIT ED STATES OF AMERICA THAN ANYWHERE ELSE ON EARTH. SO WHY waste time talking about silly things like mass movements of all of our people even if we do have cars enough to get away with it?
