15-Story Plunge

from a financial district building
Monday night and survived.
Joseph Klein was reported in
critical condition today with in
ternal injuries and a fractured
right arm. A hospital spokesman
said his chances for recovery
were good.
Klein crashed through a sky
light and corrugated metal false
roof on a secend-story setback
which broke his fall. Police
said they found Klein's wallet,
watch, glasses and neatly-folded
suit jacket in his loth-story of
fice. His wife said Klein had been
having "business troubles."

Frances once was one of Hol
lywood's top young stars but
she became one of its most tragic.
In 1943 and 1944 she was in
volved in a series of stormy
court appearances for drunken
driving and other charges. For
some of the past 14 years she
was a patient at a state mental
hospital at Steilacoom, Wash.
Three months ago Frances
turned up working at the hotel,
a job she won via a newspaper
want ad. A United Press story
about her brought a flood of job
offers and Frances Farmer
this week begins a new life.
Summer Stock Planned
After the Sullivan show, she
will appear in summer stock in
"The Chalk Garden" and "The
Magic and the Poss" at the Bucks
County (Penn.) Playhouse.
"I weighed the hazards of
show business against the se
curity of a private life, and I
decided to return to acting," she
smiled. "I've had such a great
deal of experience in just living
I think I have more to offer

who has climbed out of deep
despair.
"I had professional troubles."
she explained. "Paramount stu
dio was unhappy with me be
cause I wanted to keep up my
original stage career and sp?nt
much time in New York. I Was
severly criticized in Hollywood
as being spoiled. "
Exhausted Emotionally "
"Then after the breakup of
my first marriage (to actor Leif
Erikson) I was so exhausted emo
tionally I had to retire.
"I had great difficulty in my
personal life. You have to learn
to live with yourself. It takes a
bit of doing. I became involved
in a very crucial struggle."
A second try at marriage
failed four years ago. Then she
worked for three years unrecog
nized at a photo shop run by a
friend in Eureka, Calif.
Now friends and fans are
rooting for her comeback. The
hotel gave her a farewell orchid.
She has received thousands of
letters of encouragement. -
"We each have our problems
to work out an I thinh I've
worked out mine in my own
way," she said. "Now th past
