Much of Freudian psychology and analytic theory is based on the unprovable theory that an infant, and even a fetus in the womb, can be so in jured emotion ally as to be in trouble for the rest of his days. Here in front of me is a big book fill ed with the author's convictions as to the psychic injuries that are done to the fetus in his mother's womb. Elsewhere, I find much literature on the psychic injuries supposedly suffered by infants as they are being born. Is keep reading in the analytic literature about people who, because they love a warm bath, must be anx ious to get back to their old enjoyment of warmth and se curity in their mother's womb! I think most physicians, if they could stand reading much of this literature would laugh it to scorn as stupid and un bel'.evable. Certainly, these theo ries can never be proved, and hence they have no place in science.. What is sad is that so many laymen, reading this stuff everywhere, have come to ac cept it as scientific. Now, to my great joy, I read that Dr. Roy Grinker, a leader in this field, says that it is not scientific. He says it might come to be if the analysts would reform! Brain Develops Gradually Because of the great promi nence of these theories in mod ern thought. I have long been reading everything I could find on what the brain of a fetus or a new-born infant or even a yeSr old infant is like, and conceiv ably could do. Any mother who has watched her newborn infant develop in the first few weeks and months of life must have realized that the development of his little brain was anything but completed at his birth. At first it can only cry, suck and kick. Only gradually does the brain develop with the passage of time. The small child's brain is so poorly developed that few of us adults can remember any thing before the age of four years, which fact alone should have somewhat discouraged the analysts from spinning their many weird theories. Experts with the electroen cephalograph, which records the tiny electric currents that are constantly being formed in the brain, tell me that before the age of three or four, the records are not at all those of an adult. In fact, according to Dr. W. Grey Walter, the records are not def initely adult until the child is 10 or 11. (The Living Brain, Norton.) Reading f.ecommended We know that the new-born infant hasn t much function in his eyes, and he cannot control his fingers or arms. It is a long while before he can reach out and grab what he wants to get. Anyone interested to see how an infant's brain grows from week to week should read a sum mary of the remarkable studies published by Dr. Gesell, of Yale. No one can read his books without realizing that the little brain, during the first few weeks, is markedly undeveloped as compared with the bain of a child of one year of four years or 10 years. I recently read the abstract of a report given recently by Dr. J. P. Scott of the R. B. Jackson Laboratory, of Bar Harbor, Maine. He has been studying the reactions of puppies in their few weeks of life their reactions to their environment. He says that when the puppies are born, their nervous system is still so poorly developed that it cannot be much influenced by anyone. Although it is true that babies are not puppies, he thinks the same facts probably hold true for them; and this I would expect. During the first three weeks, the puppies' brains are so under developed that it is doubtful if anyone coulci produce any psy chological damage in them. For the first three weeks, the puppy is concerned almost en tirely with his mother and her breasts. His only concern is with food. After three weeks his brain has developed enough so that he can pay some attention to his litter-mates and the world about him. It seems to me that those of us who are not psychoanalysts should pay much attention to scientific studies like this, and little attention to the very im probably theorizing of men who surely do not think or behave like scientists. Some of the patients are made more comfortable; their cough and pain disappear, and some apparently have been kept alive for a number of months. Four out of 144 have survived for more than four years. Cancer and Obesity Dr. Samuel H. Waxier of Stan ford University found that in a certain breed of mice 35 per cent got cancer of the breast. When these mice were made obese, 62 per cent of them would get cancer of the breast. Also, the fat ones got it in 252 days, instead o: 333 days, as in the case of the thin ones. What can be cheering to many a stout woman is the fact that fattening of the mice did not induce the production of cancer in animals lacking a factor which produces cancer. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer re quests for information or to at tempt to diagnose by mail.
