Shasta. The Mt. Shasta Chairlift Corp. said the fund drive would be con cluded this week and work start ed on a 7775-foot chairlift by July 1. Calif. 'IP More than one fourth of the 391 high school teen-agers attending the 1957 Girls State here are suffering from "an acute respiratory in fection." similar to the flu that has swept Asia for months. Dr. Thomas Y. Cooper said that if laboratory reports con firm his preliminary diagnosis, it will mark the first outbreak of epidemic proportions of the flue in California. Dormitory Converted The girls were conducting mock local and state govern ments on the campus of the Uni versity of California College of Agriculture here, where Dr Cooper is a staff physician. Over 100 of the delegates checked in, suffering with fevers and stomach trouble One dormitory was converted into a makeshift hospital and state medical agents were called in. The Sacramento Red Cross is sued an emergency appeal for nurses and volunteers to assist in the outbreak. -None Dangerously 111 The group was scheduled to break up today, but a spokes man said that girls still suffer ing from the sickness would not be allowed to return home by public transportation. Cooper said the outbreak be gan Thursday, picked up Friday and mushroomed over the week end. None of the girls is dangerous ly ill, Cooper said, but several were "very sick" for a day or two. He said the attacks normal ly last about 24 hours. The doctors said it was diffi cult to determine where the disease might have been carried I from. Klamath Indian Bill Sent To Committee Washington OP Sen. Richard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.j announc ed today that he had succeeded in sending Klamath Indian ter mination legislation to a con ference committee. Neuberger said he moved for the conference in hopes of cor recting inadequacies of the House version of the Klamath termination act. He pointed out that the S550.000 appropriated by the House version to reim burse Indians for termination costs totals only half of the Senate allowance. In addition, the House bill shortens the pe riod of postponing and delaying termination, the Senator said in calling for a compromise be tween the two versions. Togoand Villagers Attack French Patrol Lome. French Togoland 'IP Seven persons were killed and three seriously wounded Mon day night when villagers at La markarra attacked a French army patrol. French authorities said the populace was trying to stop the patrol from arresting a villager. Lamarkara is in the northern tip of Togoland. Tigard Boys Go On Rock-Throwing Spree Tigard, Ore. ilP Two boys. 9 and 11, went on a rock-throwing spree over the week end and smashed out 59 window panes, a plate glass door and eight stained glass panels of an un completed Methodist church. A stained glass panel of the Holy Bible was one of the tar gets of the vandals. Reverend Stanley D. Trcfen. pastor of the new church, said cost to repair the damage will be from S500 to S600. The boys, Trefen said, had been caught, and their parents are assuming the responsibility. Salem Council Moves To End Outside Work Ban Salem HP An end to a ban on outside work -was called for Monday night by the Salem city council. The council unanimously adopt ed a subcommittee report on suspension of firemen which was made after three fire de partment employees were fired for holding outside jobs. It was proposed to allow outside work if prior approval is given and the work does not conflict with regular duties or bring discredit to employees. Presbyterians Name Albany Man Officer Holmes Speaks on Educational Demands Williamsburg, Va. IP) Gov. Robert D. Holmes of Oregon said Monday there can be no question of : whether America can afford to meet the educa tional demands of its people. Speaking at the annual Gov ernors Conference, Holmes said "no matter how we may be tempted to . cut down the exist ing education program in order to save money, to be practical I or economical or prudent, I i think our decision is clearly 1 part of a larger problem do we turn back or move forward in education." Holmes suggested three ways to make best uses of school fa cilities. They included a stag gered attendance schedule, classes the year around, and use of summer months for spe cial classes" for the exceptional, the retarded and the gifted chil dren and for expansion of adult education. The Crow and the flooded Min nesota river already have inun ated miles of cropland. At Man kato, along the Minnesota, farm ers said the floods have washed out all their crops and it is now too late in the season to replant them. Jackie Cooper Cited On Reckless Dwing Mojave, Calif. W Actor Jackie Cooper has licen r!reii to appear in court here duly t on a charge of recklea tfriviUK, it was learned today. Sheriff's deputies said Cooper was arrested- late Saturday after a 45-mile chase at speeds up to 140 miles an hour. They said the actor was returning to Holly wood with his 10-year-old si in a $12,000 sports car from a fishing trip. The Highway Patrol said it first spotted Cooper's cut travel ing at high speeds near Inyokern. Two Highway Patrol car re portedly were forced to give up the chase because of the high speed but officers radioed ahead to sheriff's deputies wlio stopped the actor here.
