The tournament, which will feature a number of the outstand ing slat artist3 on the Pacific coast, will be held on Saturday, and Sunday. June 29 and 30, at Gardener lake in Yankee creek area east of Medford. Crater Lions club is sponsor of the meet which is American Water Ski association sanctioned. It will feature AWSA competition and novice events. "Skiers from various west coast communities will begin arriving early this week to get in prac tices ahead of the meet. In addition to establishing an Oregon state tourney, the meet is aimed at building interest in the aqua sport which numerous water skiers feel has been over looked in the state. Barlow Arrives Tuesday Event3 will include slalom, tricks and jumping in men's women's veterans, junior boys, junior girls and pee wee divi sions. First rivalries each day are set for 9 a.m. with conclud ing events between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. Among the first tc arrive for workouts on the 55-acre lake owned by the Victor Gardener family, will be Bill Barlow, Piedmont, Calif. He is to arrive Tuesday with his own boat. He Is considered top contender for trick skiing laurels ui the men s division and was trick champ in t.e Sodabay tournament earlier this month at Clear Lake, Calif. Skinner has held the Northern, California overall crown and Junior Baseball Program Starts This Week in Rogue River Valley Baseball for the younger boys will be in full swing in the val ley this week as Medford city school's instruction program opens and the first Southern Oregon Junior Baseball league games are held. The Medford baseball train ing sessions begin Monday and will be conducted Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon each week for seven weeks. Boys from nines of age up through high school age may attend. Pee Wee league southern di vision games begin this Tues day with Ashland at Medford Joey Draws With Rory Syracuse, N.Y. IW Skillful Joey Giambra and aggressive Rory Calhoun, ranking middle weight contenders who fought to an unusual 10-round draw Friday night, don't want a championship fight they want a rematch. What was closest to the hearts of both fighters today was a chance to prove the draw as a "fluke," although the state's boxing rules have a supplemen tal point system to make such a decision a rarity. The fourth-ranked Giambra, a slight favorite going into the fight, weighed 15734 and the sixth-ranked Calhoun weighed 159. Referee Ruby Goldstein scor ed it for Calhoun, 5-4-1 and judge Nick Gamboli gave the same margin to Giambra. Judge Frank Forbes gave each fighter four rounds with two rounds even. His card also" had an even five points for each boxer un der the supplemental point sys tem. The United Press card gave it to Giambra, 5-4-1. Portland Buys Rapp From Pads Portland OF Earl Rapp, a left-handed hitting outfield vet eran, has been purchased by the Portland Beavers from San Diego of the Pacific Coast league. Rapp was added to give the Beavers more left-handed bat ting strength. He has been with Louisville of the American as sociation for the past month, but had been returned to San Diego. Arnold, Cooper Win at London London 'TP Mimi Arnold. 18-year-old American girls' cham pion from Redwood, Calif., and 20-year-old Ashley Cooper of Australia won the singles titles Saturday in the London lawn tennis championships, final tune up for Wimbledon. Miss Arnold beat 32-year-old Suzy Kormoczy of Hungary. 6-1. 5-7. 6-3, in an exciting and well fought TO minute match, and then Cooper defeated Neale Fras er of Australia, 6-8, 6-2, 6-3, in a routine match. j ship and took the 1956 Golden State tourney overall with first in the slalom, second in tricks and third in the jump. The tourna ment is being sponsored by Crater Lions club and will draw some of the outstanding talent of the Pacific coast area. There will be much activity at the lake today and through the week as skiers practice for the tournament. took the 1956 Golden State championship. Wall took a first in the jump at the 1955 Soda bay tourney and has taken a number of seconds and thirds in other tournaments. Gardener lake is about 15 miles from Medford. The site is reached by traveling out High way 62 to Antelope rd., turning east and following Antelope to Yankee Creek rd., and continu ing on Yankee Creek rd. to the site. There will be a charge for ad mission of spectators. Tigers and Medford Wildcats at Central Point, both at 2 p.m. Games will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays through July 30 with none scheduled on July 4. Intermediate league action opens on Wednesday with Lone Pine "at Ashland and Medford at Central Point. Each Cub league play is on Monday, July 1. Pee Wees and Intermediates will play five innings and Cubs six innings. Regulation baseballs will be used. Intermediates and Cubs are to vie on regular sized diamonds. Top Men Meet Soon Colorado Springs, Colo. !UI Commissioners of 11 major ath letic conferences will attend the annual meeting of the National Association of Collegiate Com missioners at the Broadmoor hotel this week. The group, headed by Victor O. Schmidt of the Pacific Coast Conference, will convene Wed nesday and continue session through July 2. The meeting al most coincides with the NCAA golf tournament at the Broad moor hotel, which begins Mon day and ends Saturday. Included among the items for discussion by the commissioners are recruiting, rules of transfer students, football television, summer basketball and baseball, the national physical fitness pro gram, the rules and mechanics for officiating in football and basketball and NCAA policies in general. They will also elect officers. They'll have the first of eight games which are scheduled with in a 15 day period. Seven of the conflicts will be at the Fair grounds diamond here. On Wednesday night, June 26, the Studs entertain Talent at the Medford park. It will be a Rogue Valley league contest. Medford battles the Drain Black Sox, longtime foes, on sport: Drag Races Billed Today At CW Strip Third drag race presentation of the season at the Camp White strip is scheduled today by the Southern Oregon Timing associ ation. Time trials open at 10 a.m. and the first drags are at 12:45 p.m. with stock classes leading off and events progressing up through the faster cars. Trophies will go for class winners, fast time and top eliminator. Both autos and motorcycles will compete. En tries are expected from through out southern Oregon and from northern California. A small admission charge will be made. The money is used for insurance to protect fans, for concessions facilities and for other expense with the sums left over going into a fund to build a new and safer strip with bleachers for spectators. Real Estate Deals Eyed Ne York HP The congres sional investigation of sports will make public various base ball real estate deals, including the sale and re-sale of Yankee Stadium and the Brooklyn Dodg er purchase of the ball park at Los Angeles, Rep. Emanuel Ccl ler (D-N.Y.), said Saturday. Celler, home for the week end, said "the public has the right to know all about the parks, not only the Yankees and Dodgers, but others also." "Our purpose generally is to investigate baseball, football, hockey and other sports, and the places they play," he said "We have a number of witness es to be heard concerning the land deals. We are trying to find if these are sports only, or bus inesses only, or a combination. When there are huge profits in volved in the sale of ball parks, we must investigate." Celler pointed out that base ball Commissioner Ford Frick had asked that baseball be ex empted from anti-trust laws, and that Celler had asked what, then, would rule the sport in place of the government board or commission usually appointed to control a monopoly. "Frick said the public would do so, because it would be in formed," said the congressman. "I asked about the Dodger and Giant shift to the West Coast and he said he didn't know, and neither did the public. "Our 'purpose Is to make it possible for the public to know all about all the workings of the sports we are Investigating." Cal Schools Can Break After '58 Berkeley, Calif. (TP) UCLA, more than a year to break out which has been agitating for of the Pacific Coast Conference, can have its wish after the 1958 football season but must follow a stricter atheletic code than the one it violated. That was the gist of a compro mise resolution passed Friday by the board of regents which gov erns both the Bruins and the Uni versity of California. The plan calls for the two schools to play out their 1957 and 1958 round-robin football schedules within the PCC. After that season, they will be at lib erty to schedule any team out side the conference they desire. At the same time, the regents imposed a stricter set of regula tions on the pair than those re cently passed by the Pacific Coast Conference. They take ef fect immediately. UCLA was put on three years probation in May of last year for illegal payments to athletes, as were three other PCC schools. Seattle Studs Come The Seattle Studs come here Saturday night, June 6, and Sun day afternoon, June 7, for their annual "civil war." A contest with the Klamath Falls Kubs is here on Wednesday night, July 10. The Cheney Studs have met Drain in past recent seasons in the Southewestern Oregon and Southern Oregon leagues. With the Southern Oregon circuit in operative this year, the Black Sox are playing independent ball. Presidio's squad includes a good number of players with minor league pro experience and who are owned by major league organizations. Ex-collegiate stars are on the roster. This season will be, the third that the Cheney Lumber compa ny team from Washington has met its Medford counterpart. In addition to the Seattle and Med ford clubs, the Cheney firm also has a Tacoma team this year. Angels Homer Nine Times; Padres Win Los Angeles OP) The Los Angeles Angels had a field day Saturday, slamming' out nine home runs for a stunning 22-5 victory over the Sacramento Solons in a Pacific Coast league game at Wrigley field. The nine homers tied the league record for one team in a single for a single inning. The old record was four, set by Salt Lake City in 1923 and San Fran cisco in 1938. Bert Hamric led the home run onslaught with three homers, one in the second inning and two in the seventh. Steve Bilko collected his 17th homer of the year in the seventh to take over the league lead in that depart ment. Ralph Maunello (5-2) went the distance for the Angels, al lowing six hits. The loser was Sacramento starter Roger Osen baugh (3-10). The victory gave the Angels a 4-2 advantage in the current series. San Francisco (HI Floyd Robinson hit his sixth home run of the season in the top of the ninth inning Saturday to break a 6-6 tie and give the San Diego Padres a 7-6 victory over the Pacific Coast league leading San Francisco Seals. Such Crust III Coasts to Victory Detroit (if) Such Crust III coasted to an easy top-point win Saturday in the Detroit Memo rial Regatta on the Detroit river. Freddie Alter drove the flashy boat through three races in the regatta, winning each for a perfect 1,200 points. Alter shoved the craft to an average speed of 85.769 miles per hour in the final 15-mile race and screecher it at 93.717 miles in .the final lap the fastest lap of the day. The newly - christened Wild root Charley pushed Such Crust III through the three races but finished second with 925 points. Such Crust III is owned by Jack Schaeffer, Detroit. " --"Wm 1 1 limfciiTHiiiitinliriiirli Sunday, June 23, 1957 Legion Crew in Tvinbiil At Klamath Klamath Falls' American Leg ion junior baseball has taken sort of a back seat to Babe Ruth league play in the Pelican com munity but the Medford Legion nine, which plays at Klamath this afternoon, is anticipating tougher opposition than it en countered last Sunday at Lake view. Two games are billed today with the first at 1 p.m. Each scrap is planned for seven in nings. There's little information available on the Klamath nine. It has played two games to date, defeating'Bend 7 to 5 and losing to the crew 17 to 5. A probable pitcher for one of the games is Dean Dunson. Wayne Allen and Dennis Barr are likely moundsmen for Med ford with Tom Laurence avail able for relief if necessary. Business Manager Jack Sides has expressed much optimism concerning the Medford nine this year, terming it "the sharp est team in four or five years." However, he's indicated that the local Legion baseball program is hurting financially with funds pretty well depleted after to day's trip. He's reported a couple of contributions lately from businessmen. Judge Works On Decision New York OPI Federal Judge Sylvester J. Ryan worked Saturday on next Monday's de cision that will tell how the Jim Norris boxing monopoly must be broken up. The judge indicated several times during the hearing on remedies, which finished Friday, that his decision will order: Chief stockholders Norris and partner Arthur Wirtz to sell their $2,000,000 worth of stock in the Madison Square Garden Corp. through a trustee ship during the next five years meanwhile losing immediately their voting powers on the stock and their offices as presi dent and director. The dissolution of the In ternational Boxing clubs of New York and Illinois, now owned by the Garden Corp., and the Chicago Stadium Corp., respec tively. A limit of two world title fights each year to the Garden Corp. and to the Chicago Stad ium, for a total of four. No exclusive contracts on fighters, except for a single re turn championship bout, and no exclusive contracts on other fight arenas. A compulsory leasing of the Garden and Chicago stadium to independent promoters for title fights at reasonable rentals. A limit of but one series of weekly TV fights to one promo tional organization. Last March, 'Ryan found the defendants guilty of monopoly in the conduct of title fights. The defendants were: Norris, Wirtz, the IBCs of New York and Il linois, and the Garden Corp. June Robinson, Tillamook, runner-up last year in the girls' division championships, won 95 Attending Net Classes Medford city school tennis classes have a record turnout this year. Instructor Warren Brenner reported an enrollment of 95 in the program last week, first week of the classes. Brenner has six classes, an hour long each, with the first beginning at 6 a. m. at the senior high courts and the last ending at noon. The instruction will last four more weeks in morning sessions Monday through Friday. Five basic strokes are being convered in the instruction. Forehand and backhand drives were studied last week. Largest previous enrollment was 62.
