Boston winning. Thursday, Jun 20, 19J7 The Medical Roundup fr. Sleeping Pills Scores of people ask if it is safe to take sleeping pills year in and year out, and I say, "Yes, I believe it is." In my long years of prac tice I have seen only a few peo ple who were taking too many sleeping pills, I could easily get them off the drug if I put them in 1A ES i a hospital; but always then their question was, "How am I going to get to sleep tonight?" I am pretty sure that if these people could get to sleeping naturally, or if they weren't so jittery, they wouldn't feel any need for the pills. I know that cases have been reported in which the person did have a habit. I have seen a few men or women who had what one might call a habit, but they were all highly neurotic or mild ly psychotic persons when they began taking the drug. I never saw anyone who was as badly wrecked by taking barbiturates as people commonly are who take morphine or too much al cohol. The person who is going lo get a habit usually starts right in taking the drug during the day. This, I think, is a danger ous practice. I must admit though that I have seen a number of per sons who got themselves out of a mental hospital and back hard at work simply bv taking each day four or five sleeping tablets which calmed their terribly jit tery nerves. No Deterioration For 10 years I watched a phy sician who had got out of a men tal hospital and back into a big practice by taking about ten grains of a strong sleeping medi cine each day. I looked him over every year and could never see any deterioration, either mental or physical. He came to be one of the most trusted and loved and appreciated physicians in his city. Then, unfortunately, a marital tragedy hit him, and he went to a psychiatrist who, hor rified, promptly took away his drug. This, I think, was unwise, because without the steadying effect of the medicine, the man had to go back to his old mental hospital. In quite a few cases I have al lowed persons who were former ly chronic alcoholics to take bar biturates each day, if this meant that for years the man was able to leave liquor alone and to keep at work. My feeling is that it is impos sible to help many highly tense and jittery persons, and to get them out of a nervous breakdown unless one sees to it that they get sleep. Giving them sleep is often the essential part of the cure. Without it, there will be no cure. I know that after my influenza in 1918, when for a time I almost completely lost the power to sleep, I just had to take sleeping medici nes. Without them I don't see how I could have recovered. It Didn't Work Some of my doctor friends said, "Don't take that stuff; just lie there at night until you go to sleep." I tried, but it didn't work. One trouble was that every day I had to work hard to earn a living for myself and family, and if I lay awake all night or sat up and read all night, I was too dopey next day to go to the office. Every so often, in some lay magazine, I read a highly alarm ing article to the effect that sleeping-pills produce as horrible a habit as morphine, but this I find hard to believe because never in my life have I seen it. I have seen a few miserable hu man wrecks who were taking large doses of barbiturate each day, but I was sure they had been psychotic to begin with. Their nervous system cried out so constantly for sedation that, if given alcohol, morphine, bar biturates or a tranquilizer, they would promptly start taking all they could lay their hands on. The big point I would make is that these persons were not ruined by the barbiturates; they were born to be nervous wrecks. Nephrosis Many anxious parents ask what can be done for nephrosis. This is a disease usually of child ren, who tend at times to swell up almost as if they were in a diving-suit. Usually there are enormous amounts of albumin coming away in the urine. Unfortunately, the disease is not well understood. There it now a Nephrosis Foundation made up of people who are gath ering money for research. For tunately, drugs are being found which sometimes will tide a child over a fk're-up in the dis ease. As yet, there is no good cure in sight. Dr. Alvarez nopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for information or to attempt to diagnose by mail.
