Tuesday. June 18, 19S7 The Medical Roundup fr. ; Why Womin Don't Marry I A woman tells me that she is I one of four sisters, between 40 t and 50 vears of age; none of them ever had a beau! I told her tiiat r"have records of fam ilies like hers; I rem ember one in which seven broth ers and sisters in one genera tion and five in the next did not marry. Evidently a tenden cy to celibacy can run in certain families. The lady says what is so true, and tins is than many of the women who do not marry are too shy ever to go out with a man. Or, if they were to go out with one they liked, and he were to get affectionate, they would get embarrassed and frightened, and would rebuff him. My correspondent says she always wanted to marry and have a husband but, as she says. "I guess I didn't try hard enough to find the fellow. When out at a party, I stayed with the firls." She has the idea that most of the excuses that women give for not marrying are not as good as hers. She says she has watch ed womeii who have had a num ber of husbands one after the other and she his studied their technique. She doubts if they are any prettier, smarter, kinder, or better-adjusted than are her spinster friends, but soon after one husband goes, they get an other. They go to dances and summer hotels and parties and cruises. They go w here marriage able men are to be found not a bad idee! They enjoy being with men, and can banter with them and be at ease with them. They know how to handle a man. As the lady says, there are a lot men also who are too shy to take a girl out, or to talk to her, or ever to propose to her Schizophrenia in Family Many people may ask. But why this excessive shyness? I have asked a few hundred of these shy people what their rela tives were like, and practically always they have told me that one or more were mildly schizo phrenic. Characteristic of schizo phrenics is their shyness, their . reserve, and their touch-me-not- j ness. People who are like schizo- j phrenics we doctors call schizoid. One can often recognize a schiz- j oid in a moment by his odd, shy I handshake, with eyes averted. j Cigarette Prices Raised by Firms New York W Four of the country's largest cigarette manu facturers Monday boosted prices on regular and king sized brands the equivalent of one ceiit per pack at retail. The increases, announced by American Tobacco company, Liggett and Myers Tobacco com pany, Philip Morris, Inc., and P. Lorillard company, do not affect filtertips. On the wholesale level the in crease is 35 cent.1 per thousand cigarettes. The advance reflects higher costs all along the line from raw tobacco to selling and advertising. Representatives of valley gro cery stores jesterday said the price increase will go into effect in the Medford area. Popular brands of cigarettes will be raised 10 cents per car ton, or about one cent a pack age, they said. Egypt Said Planning Submarine Warfare By UNITED PRESS Israeli officials have accused Egypt of planning submarine warfare against Israeli ship; bound for the Gulf of Aqaba A Jerusalem dispatch said the Russians had donated three sub marines to the Egyptian Navv and predicted they would oper ate against Israeli and '"other" shipping in the Red Sea ap proaches to the Gulf of Aqaba Egypt's relations with the Arab world also worsened. An Amman dispatch said the Jor dan government Sunday night ordered its embassy in Cairo closed today. London iIP The western allies told Russia Monday they consider the latest Soviet dis armament proposals "an impor tant move toward agreement'' on a partial disarmament treaty. Portland IP Police today searched for a bandit who slug ged a waitress t a restaurant near here and took approximate ly $162. Mayo clinic Emarttut Professur uf Medldnt, Mao Foundation It is said that there are so j many people like this. Many of them eventually get married, but often the marriage does not bring much happiness, either to them or to the spouse. Why? Because it is so hard for these people to show love or receive love. Often they cannot accept it even when it is offered them. Can they fight their way out of thi? Some do. Sometimes two schizoids marry- then they can understand one another. 129 S.
