Oth er community property states are Louisiana, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and Washington The House Ways & Means Committee, agreed last week to reduce the special tax benefit. Awaiting Final Approval Official announcement of the i action was withheld pending final committee approval of the bill later this month. The discrimination in taxes levied on retired couples on the basis of residence occurred when Congress in 1954 granted them a credit, or savings, in income taxes on retirement income. Retirement income was de fined to include stock dividends, interest on savings, income from rented property, pensions and social security payments. The last already was exempt from income tax. But in the eight community property states retired taxpay er can attribute half of his re tirement income to his wife, thereby enabling the couple to claim a combined tax saving of up to $480 a year. Bars Loophole In restricting the benefit, the committee voted to bar taxpay ers in the community property states from attributing to their spouses any part of an individually-earned pension or an nuity. Actually, retired couples in the other 40 states also can claim up to $480 in tax credits on retirement income, provided the property producing the income is jointly owned. There is another requirement, however. The wife must have had earned income of her own in excess of S600 a year in at least 10 years of her life. In com munity property states both spouses automatically meet that requirement if either has earn ed $1,200 a year in at least 10 years. m Medford Horses lo Enter Salern Show Two Medford girls will leave Friday for Salem where they , will enter horses in the 11th an-j nual All-Arabian horse show' there June 22 and 23.
