Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Smith, of Sardine creek, attended the commencement exercises at Ore gon State college June 3. where their son, Douglas Smith, was among the graduates. The occasion was Mrs. Gray's birthday. 8,11 force, of Portland, spent the week end of June 8 and 9 visitir his parents. Mr. and Mrs. H. D. force. Bill is employed by United Press. Jenny Lou and Spike Thomp son left June 9 by plane for Tucson, Ariz . where they were met by their mother. Mrs. Sam Ledbettrr. They accompanied their mother from Arizona to Senora, Mexico, where they will upend the summer. Their father. Creighton Thompson, also lives in Mexico. The yongsters make their home with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Thompson, during the winter months, and attend the Hanby school. Jan and Debbie, twin daugh ters of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Pety of Allegany, Ore., are visiting this week in the home of their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Smith. Mrs. Pety is the former Marion Smith. Dave Parker and Williard Waterhous will leave June 14 for Ft. Lewis by train with other National Guardsmen for two weeks of tactical, field and classroom training. Dave was among the seniors who graduated from Crater High school this year. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Parker of Lampman rd. Willard has completed his junior year at Crater High school. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Waterhouse. Amethyst Rebekah lodge will observe homecoming at the next meeting. Wednesday, June 19 at 8 p.m. in the Odd Fellows hall. This will be the last regu lar meeting of the lodge until September. All members are urged 'to attend. Mrs. Lester Parker, noble grand requests all members who I plan to help decorate the hall I and dining room for this meet i ing to be at the hall at 2 p.m the afternoon of June 19. Wigle on Sunday. June 9. They recently returned from Arizona, where they spent the winter. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Lyman went to Corvallis to attend the graduation exercises of Oregon State college June 3. Their daughter. Miss Shirley Lyman, was among the graduates. She majored in home economics. Robert Batch was also among the graduates at Oregon State college. He majored in engi neering. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Balch, recently moved to Medford. The Gold Hill Garden club will meet Friday, June 21. it the home of Mrs. Ernest Gregorv on Highway 99 north. A potluck picnic luncheon will be held at noon. Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Maen were honored at a no-host house warming party given recently in their home on Fourth avenue. j Pierce lo Address 1 i j Engineers Meeting I Archie Pierce of the Tucker i Sno-Cat corpation will be the mains peaker at the annual la Idies night program of the Rogue ! Valley section, Professional En gineers of Oregon, Monday eve ning at the Medford hotel. Section members, guests and women are invited to the soc ial hour at 6:30 p.m.. accord ing to James K. Hoey, local con stulting engineer. The dinner ; meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. ! Back From Tour I Pierce has just returned from i an observation tour of "Oper ation Deep Freeze," at the South ! Pole. He will show slides of this i operation as well as the return trip, which took him through parts of Asia and Europe. No meeting has been planned for the section for July, Hoey said. John C. Boyle, vice presi dent and chief engineer of the California Oregon Power com pany has invited the Rogue Val ley section engineers to tour the Big Bend hydro-electric pro ject on the Klamath river during August. This trip will be con eluded with a dinner in Klam ath Falls to interest engineers in that area in the program of the Professional Engineers of Oregon. Joint Meet In September a joint meetinp will be held with the Mid-Wil lamette and Southwest section; of the PEO at Roseburg. It is hoped enough members will be attending the annual convention of the state organization in Eu gene in October to have a meet ing there at that time, members said. According to friends, no details have been learned concerning the accident. He was proprietor of the Elick son's Lime Distributing com pany. It has been announced that amateur tennis matches will be held at the Hanby school in Gold Hill Wednesday evening, June 19, at 6:40 p.m. According to Jose Corona who is tennis instructor for the Gold Hill area, some of the out standing amateur tennis players in the Rogue valley will play in these matches. They are Jim Gordon, a former high school state champion from Medford. Jerry Kalapus, district winner from Medford, and the 1955 Ore gon state high school champion: Howard Duggan of Sams Vallev: Todd Tibbutt of Medford and Ogden Kellogg from Gold Hill There will be no admission charge. Mrs. Naoma Haviland of the Truck cafe returned June 11 after attending her daughter's graduation at Kovina High school in Los Angeles. John Rains left June 14 to return to Point Mugu. Bower, 71. of 729 West 13th st., apparently suf fered a heart attack while op erating a car on North Ivy St.. yesterday afternoon, according to reports from city police and the county coroner's office. Hff was dead when a deputy coron er arrived. Police reported that the Bow er auto, headed north on Ivy ! st struck a parked car near tar I southeast corner of the Ivy and : Fifth St. section, continued on and came to rest on the curb ; and sidewalk at the northeas corner. Mrs. Bower wai riding with her husband and tried to steer the vehicle away from the park ed car, according to police. They said Mrs. Bower apparently was unhurt. The 1954 Pontiac sedan rolled slowly across the inter section and officers stated that ; it was stopped by hand by Miss uiana uiaire rcusseil, n, oi zui North Ivy st. Only minor damage was re ported to the Bower car and to the parked 1951 Ford. Police were summoned about 1:30 pm. Survivors of Mr. Bower in addition to his wife include a step-son, State Police Sgt. Floyd Crafts. The body is at Conger-Morri.-, funeral home. Jet Plane Rushes Blood to Soldiers Tacoma IP1 Eighteen pints of rare-type blood flown from the Red Cross in Portland by an ir Force jet to Madigan Army lospital near here saved the life ,'f a Ft. Lewis soldier suffering from a bleeding stomach ulcer. Madigan Army doctor said last light. John Betts Jr., the soldier, had .cen admitted to the hospital June 12 in what was described as a "precarious'' condition. Portland's Red Cross had a quantity of the special blood type on hand, and when the sol dier's condition apparently be came worse, arrangements were made for an F-89 jet interceptor from the Portland airbase to de liver it to McChord field Satur day afternoon. Lieutenant Colonel Lewig E. Wolfard. Madigan staff doctor, said Betts' condition is "serious." "but added that the mercy flight saved the GI's life. office department. While in southern Oregon he was a guest in the home of his mother, Mrs. Maybelle Rains. 11 Mrs. Millie Walker returned June 7 after a month's visit at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Paine and daughter, Katherine Anne, at Hood River, Ore. Mrs Paine is the former Sybil Walker. The Paines accompanied Mrs Walker to her home, where they were overnight guests. En route to Gold Hill they were guests in the homes of Mr. and Mrs Floyd "Dott" Eddings at Oakridge and Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam Brewer and family, ana Mrs. Ralph Darling in Ft. Klam ath The Eddings, Mrs. Brewei and Mrs. Darling are all former residents of Gold Hill. Mrs. George Hatch, of Med ford, has sold her home there. She left June 14 for Portland to make her home.
