W The Magnetic Hemoval of Foreign Bodies From the Windpipe or Gullet I recently read an interesting book- by Dr. Murdock Equen (Charles Thomas) on the removal of foreign bod ies from the wind pipe or gullet or stom ach of infants, with the help of one of the powerful Alni co m a g n e t s. This magnet consists of a Dr alloy, body, Alvarez c o m p i icaiea Naturally, the foreign if it is to be removed by a magnet, must be made of iron or steel or other substance that can be attracted magnetically. It is remarkable how large some of the objects are that an infant can inhale or swallow. Dr. Equen shows in his illustra tions many safety-pins, good sized nails and bolts, a sardine can key, suitcase keys, bobby pins, the cover from the lock on a car door, staples, screws, tacks, etc. Small children sometimes swallow or inhale a foreign body when a brother hits or tumbles against them. Even adults sometimes get things into their lungs. For in stance, a nurse, while arranging her hair, was holding a number of bobby pins in her mouth. Suddenly, she sneezed and down went the pins. An old lady with an open safety-pin between her teeth, sneezed and swallowed the pin. Help for the Paralyzed Harry A. Doll, of 204 Graham Hopedale Road, Burlington, N.C., commenting on the buzzer that a completely paralyzed man can ring by touching two wires with is tongue, tells me of a page-turner which he made for a young man who could move only his eyes and his tongue. In spite of his handicap, the young man decided to finish college by reading textboks but he could not turn over pages. Now. he ' Narcotics Racket in Portland Described Portland OPi A S10.000-a-month narcotics racket, oper ating from bootleg heroin joints known as "shooting galleries" in Portland, was described here Thursday by a city vice squad lieutenant. Lt. Dudley Nelson reported there were more than 40 known drug addicts in the city, each us ing from S40 to $50 worth of heroin daily. He said "at one time or another they will resort to stealing to get the money for their drugs." Nelson's statement followed an appeal by Mayor Terry Schrunk for a joint city-council crackdown on narcotics traffic in the city.
