That beautiful United States dollar is going to look as bad as either or both of the foregoing if the present trend of creeping inflation continues. Inflation is a collect word which doesn't mean much to living Americans because they never have beer, up against hat the word signi fies. Not even the most generous employer with the fattest purse can raise his employees' salaries fast enough to provide a living wage. The first babies to whimper for food and finally to starve to death are the children of persons on fixed incomes. Trie first adults to go are pensioners and others whose incomes also are fixed. Inflation is deadly stuff, like cancer and, maybe, more than fallout deformities. The infla tion of currency is reflected in a steadily descending purchas ing power of money. It can be a slow and gradual process as presently in the United States, or it can strike with snake sud denness after some national catastrophe, such as defeat in war. Lilt a Snowball Gradual inflation is like a down hill snowball. It picks up speed or momentum, and if it picks up enough it becomes un controlled inflation. That is the point of no return. Beyond that point lies immeasurable human suffering and absolute economic chaos. There is an inflation snowball in the United States today and it is rolling down hill accumulat ing speed. The grade is not yet very steep and the point of no return still is some distance in the future, just how far being I a matter of considerable dls ! pute. : The United Press reported ! from Washington on May 24 that the cost of living rose to an J other record high in April. If that trend long continues the rate of inflation or reduction ! in the dollar's purchasing pow I er may be expected to acceler- ate to 1 per cent, 2 per cent I even 10 per cent a month. Penny by penny, the dollar's value would shrink until, final ly, a dollar would buy nothing at all. At that point of no return the American way of life will have had it. Trial of Gypsy's Charges Delayed Portland IP Trial sched uled for tomorrow on charges j oy a Jfortland Gypsy woman that Mayor Terry Schrunk and four members of the city council were guilty of discrimination in forcing her and other Gypsies from their downtown Portland living quarters has been de- layed. Chief United States District Judge Claude McColloch gave attorneys for both sides addi tional time to prepare cases after Mrs. Mary Ristick substituted j a complaint to include the mayor and four councilmen instead of Portland as a corporate entity. Schrunk and the councilmen Thursday filed a motion in fed eral court to dismiss Mrs. Ris tick's suit. The officials claimed Mrs. Ristick had failed to show which constitutional right she claims would be violated by her eviction from a dwelling which the city has said does not com ply with the sanitary code. St.. r GlN If Eugene Shooting Leads To Lawsuit Eugene HP Charles Graves, resident of a duplex next to the home occupied by Albert Wach smuth, yesterday filed suit against 10 policemen for S100, 000 as a result of a gunbattle be tween Wachsmuth and officers ' Feb. 22. Wachsmuth shot and killed State Police Officer Charles Sanders and critically wounded Deputy Sheriff David Heffner during the shooting. Graves, who was in his apart ment during the fight, charged in his suit that the officers were negligent in not insuring his safety. He was forced to stay in his half of the duplex and claimed he was injured by tear gas and suffered injuries to his nervous system. He said bullets and tear gas shells penetrated his apartment numerous times. Named as defendants were Lane County Sheriff Ed Elders, State Police Sgt. Robert Baker and eight other law enforcement officers. Graves also seeks S10, 000 damages from an insurance company which bonded Sheriff Elders. Mayflower Cargo of 'Treasure' Unloaded Plymouth, Mass. (IP) The crew of the Mayflower II today began unloading its cargo of 92 "treasure" chests. They include animal feed for President Eis enhowers Gettysburg farm. The chests, weighing up to 500 pounds each, contained 5200,000 worth of items ranging from Mayflower II construction chips to snuff boxes. Warwick Charlton, one of the British sponsors of the May flower's 54 - day trans-Atlantic voyage, carried off the boat a gold medallion with a tiny watch inside for President Eis hower. W. Lafferty learned Thursday that he had been j awarded a "substantial" legal fee for his long court battle to ; force distribution of $7 million belonging to 18 western Oregon counties but impounded by the federal government. Lafferty and Richard L. Mer-; rick, Washington. D.C.. attor-' ney, had filed suit against the counties for a legal fee. Hoegh, former gover- j nor of Iowa, was nominated to succeed Peterson as head of the Civil Defense Administration. j Peterson, a former Republican I governor of Nebraska, has served as civil defense chief since February, 1953. If confirmed by the Senate, Peterson will succeed Robert D. Coe as ambassador to Denmark. Coe, a veteran foreign service officer, recently resigned.
