Arctic Inspection
Declared 'Comical'
Helsinki, Finland W So
viet Party Chief Nikita S. Khru-.
shchev said today the idea of an
Arctic open skies inspection
zone sounded "quite comical."
It is ' quite comical to think
of an inspection zone in an area
of ice and snow," Khrushchev
told a final day press confer
ence here.
He did not elaborate except
to say -that the idea of inspec
tion zones had not met with ap
proval in the West after Russia
had proposed a Far East-Alaska-Western
U.S. zone at the Lon
don disarmament talks.
The proposal was an out
erowth of President Eisen
hower's original "open skies"
plan for aerial reconnaissance to
detect any buildup for attack
by East or West.
