S o m e times the liver is so full of huge masses of cancer that it fills the up per half of the a b d o m e n. Dr Arvarei sooner or lat er the patient is likely to be come jaundiced. A jaundice that comes quietly to an elderly man or woman should always be looked on with alarm. Today, in cases of doubt as to the diagnosis, an expert can push a sharp-tipped tube called a trocar into the liver. With this he pulls out a slice of tissue which is then examined under the microscope. If cancer is present, it can easily be seen and diagnosed with certainty. When it is found, there is little sense in exploring the abdomen surgically because there can be no cure. Whenever I see an old man with a big cancer of his stomach or his bowel, before I let him be operated on, I get an expert to test the functions of the liver. If 1 find that there is practically no function left, and especially if a "biopsy" with the trocar shows cancer, I am much against a surgeon's operating because there is no chance of a cure, and there is a good chance that the man will die within 48 hours aftei the operation. Some people ask, "How can we be sure that the liver is free from cancer?" We doctors can not be sure that the liver is free, but in the presence of a normal liver function, as deter mined by tests, it may well be that it is free. Undisciplined Children In School Today John Jenes, in California, just sent me a newspaper clipping telling of the principal of a local elementary school who is being sued for having paddled an un manageable child. Several of the children in the school have written the newspaper express ing their approval of the princi pal's action, and their sympathy with the idea that children in school should show some de cency and respect for authority. In the paper I find, also, a letter from a teacher of many years' standing who feels that the modern psychiatric view that parents must never teach their children to be self-controjled or respectful is reaping a whirl wind, so far as the school teach ers are concerned. This woman writes, "The last time I sub stituted, I was subjected to per sonal indignities beyond all be lief in addition to such wild, unrestrained class room behav ior that it was not possible to do any teaching." One boy kept kicking a window-sill for two hours, jangling everyone's nerves, but no one could stop him. Another boy kept shooting small pebbles around the room; others would not sit down; some left the room when they felt like it. One boy tried to push the teacher down a ramp. She was met with jeers and name-calling at every at tempt at maintaining discipline. "There were about one-fourth . . . who were uncontrollable; the rest could not work normal ly or feel natural in such bed lam." ' It Won't Work This woman thinks about the only thing a teacher can do is ' to send the incorrigible child home, and if he remains incor rigible, to refuse to take him back. Obviously, of course, this will not work because the par ents will sue the teacher and the school board. As this teach er says, the principal did not dare back her up because he had no- backing from the parents. She says she has decided never to teach again. She has gone into another type of work. Naturally, I am not saying that this is the situation in all our schools; I haven't made a survey and hence do not know, but I have read a number of letters from teachers much like this letter in the paper. I don't know what can be done so long as many parents accept the present-day theory that children must never be taught respect for anyone, or consideration for anyone's feelings or rights. Actually, I am very grateful that, early in life, before I can remember how it was done, my parents taught me the good manners that have made my way through life smooth and happy ever since. Fifty-odd years ago, when I went through school, my teachers had no disciplinary problems that I can remember. All of us children had been brought up at home to respect authority, both that of our par ents and that of our teachers.
